California Dog Kept Her Head Down In A Shelter Kennel After Being Returned Again And Again

Ginger spent eight long years in a California shelter, passed over and returned by adopters until one woman decided this timid senior dog deserved a chance at real love.

A Heartbreaking Record

Ginger’s shelter paperwork told a tragic story with just one word: surrendered. For eight long years, the timid dog watched the world pass by from the confines of a kennel.

During that time, she was adopted twice, only to be returned to the shelter both times. The repeated rejection took a heavy toll on her spirit.

Eventually, people began to view the anxious dog as completely unadoptable. She spent her days keeping to herself, her head tucked low and her tail tucked firmly between her legs.

But one woman named Beth saw past the frightened exterior. Looking at the fragile dog, Beth knew exactly what she had to do.

Taking A Chance On Love

Beth firmly believed that every animal deserves to experience love. She refused to accept that Ginger was a lost cause.

“I was like, ‘She deserves love. I’m going to go adopt her,'” Beth recalled about her life-changing decision.

Bringing an institutionalized dog into a home environment was a massive shift for both of them. Ginger had to learn what it meant to be a cherished pet.

Determined to make her new best friend comfortable, Beth immediately made modifications to her home. She went out and bought carpets just to help the dog walk safely.

Even the kitchen, which was the only room left uncarpeted, received a special area rug. This created a safe, non-slip path to guide Ginger through the house.

Despite her age, she became incredibly puppy-like and started thoroughly enjoying her new life. Her absolute favorite thing in the world turned out to be tennis balls.

Beth wanted to make up for all the lost years of play. She bought around 200 tennis balls for her eager companion.

She would throw ten balls at a time into the yard, just letting Ginger run and play to her heart’s content.

Matching Each Other’s Energy

The connection between Beth and Ginger grew into something truly special. The senior dog quickly learned to match her new mom’s energy perfectly.

If Beth started dancing around the house, Ginger would start jumping around and getting the zoomies. If Beth started singing, Ginger would happily bark along with her.

Even when Ginger is in a grumpy, tired mood, a simple offer of a treat or a tennis ball brings her perky, puppy-like energy right back.

“The bond we have, I think we definitely grew up together,” Beth explained. They quickly became a force to be reckoned with.

Ginger’s presence became even more crucial when tragedy struck Beth’s family. Beth recently went through the devastating loss of her brother.

During her most emotional and difficult days, Ginger has been a constant source of comfort. Just looking at the dog she saved helps Beth find strength.

“I just look at her and see her light up and see how I changed her life,” Beth shared, adding that the experience has inspired her to want to help others.

Now around 14 years old, Ginger wears her history on her sleeve. Her face, chest, and paws are beautifully overtaken by a distinguished salt and pepper look.

She has plenty of unique physical quirks that make her special. She is missing some teeth, a detail Beth noticed right after bringing her home.

Ginger is also missing an ear, leaving her with one floppy ear while the other is cut at the base. While people sometimes give them weird looks, Beth thinks she is perfect.

To Beth, Ginger is simply the sweetest dog and one of the most easily loved animals she has ever met.

Cherishing Every Single Moment

Because of her age, Ginger’s health requires close monitoring. She has a history of masses that she has been treated for in the past.

Recently, Beth found another bump on Ginger’s nose that veterinarians cannot operate on. The reality is that they might only have a year or two left together.

The news hit Beth hard, realizing she will eventually have to say goodbye to her best friend. But rather than dwell on the sadness, she made a promise to her dog.

She sat down with Ginger and promised to cherish every memory they make together, no matter what happens. Looking back on their incredible journey, Beth simply says, “I’m glad she chose me.”
