For a senior dog named Pearl, life had been anything but easy. At 12 years old, the sweet poodle found herself entirely alone on the streets of Miami.

She is deaf and partially blind, making the bustling city an incredibly dangerous place for her to navigate.

Rescuers suspect she had been used as a breeder dog for years. When she could no longer provide puppies, she was simply dumped and left to fend for herself.

Eventually, she was picked up as a stray and brought to a local shelter, but her struggles were far from over.

A Ticking Clock

At the shelter, Pearl’s situation quickly became dire. She had a lot of issues going on in her body and was deemed medically complex.

Because of her extensive medical needs, she couldn’t be placed on the public adoption floor.

Soon after, a compassionate animal lover named Ryan stepped in to give Pearl the home she desperately needed.

Making Herself At Home

When Pearl arrived at Ryan’s house, she didn’t need any time to adjust.

Despite everything she had been through, she walked right in and acted like she had lived there her entire life.

By her second or third day, she found her voice and started barking.

According to Ryan, the happy senior hasn’t stopped barking since, finally feeling comfortable enough to express herself.

A Drastic Change In Climate

Now, her new home with Ryan was located just an hour away from the Canadian border.

Ryan jokingly described their new environment as “the tundra,” a massive shift for a Florida dog.

To keep her warm, Pearl was equipped with a whole new wardrobe of little sweatshirts, winter coats, and protective boots.

When winter arrived, Pearl experienced something completely foreign to her.

Stepping outside into the freezing weather, the senior dog was initially baffled by the falling white flakes.

Ryan recalled Pearl’s confused reaction: “What is touching me? Why is this touching my face? Like, this is not rain.”

“I feel like if I don’t adopt them, I don’t think that they’re going to get homes, and they’re going to end up being euthanized,” he explained.

Pearl’s days of being used, discarded, and left in crowded shelters are permanently behind her.

She now spends her days playing in the snow, wearing warm coats, and being endlessly spoiled.

Ryan has made a lifelong commitment to the sweet senior dog who just needed someone to take a chance on her.

“I would tell her I will always take care of her,” Ryan said. “She’s safe, and she is loved, and she’ll spend the rest of her life like that. She will never be hurt again.”
