A Freezing Fight For Survival
The winter weather had turned brutal, plunging into the single digits with snow and ice covering the ground.
For a lost dog wandering the freezing streets of East St. Louis, time was rapidly running out.
Animals left out in these harsh elements rarely have more than a day or two to survive.
But one desperate dog decided to take a chance and ask for help before it was too late.
A Desperate Plea At The Door
Jill, the director of operations at Gateway Pet Guardians, received an urgent notification from a Good Samaritan.
A stray dog had shown up at a local house, crying and begging to be let inside.
According to Jill, it is incredibly unique for a lost dog to actively beg for interaction at a stranger’s home.
He knew he was in trouble, and he was hoping someone on the other side of the door would listen.
A Frantic Phone Call
The homeowner was at work when the dog arrived, but her teenage daughters were inside the house.
Seeing the freezing animal crying on their property, they immediately called their mother in a panic.
“What are we supposed to do?” they asked her over the phone. “He’s so cold.”
Knowing the dog wouldn’t survive much longer outside, the mother quickly came up with a plan to help.
A Makeshift Safe Haven
The mother authorized her daughters to open the garage and let the freezing dog inside.
The teenagers sprang into action, gathering blankets and towels to create a warm bed for their unexpected guest.
They fed him treats and even brought out some of their own dogs’ toys for him to play with.
Safe from the bitter wind, the dog was finally contained while they waited for rescue staff to arrive.
Shivering In The Rescue Van
Jill drove over to the house to pick up the dog and transport him back to the shelter.
When she finally got him into the rescue van, she could see just how much the elements had affected him.
He was shivering so hard that his body was becoming rigid, a sight that Jill admitted was very hard to see.
His face and extremities, especially his feet, were bright red and approaching frostbite.
Clues Of A Loved Past Life
Despite his terrifying ordeal, it was clear to the rescue team that this dog had not always been a stray.
He was very clean and was wearing a nice harness when they found him.
Jill assumed he was a well-kept indoor pet who had somehow gotten lost, noting that he didn’t seem to have any outdoor survival instincts.
He had simply relied on humans for help because humans were all he knew.
The Grateful Office Dog
The rescue staff named the sweet dog Adobe.
The day after he was brought in, Adobe was upgraded to the role of official office dog at the shelter.
He proved to be a wonderful companion, happy to finally be warm again and surrounded by people looking out for him.
Jill could tell he was incredibly grateful to be safe from the harsh winter elements.
Searching For The Missing Piece
Because Adobe was clearly someone’s pet, Gateway Pet Guardians immediately began searching for his family.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t microchipped and didn’t have any identification tags on his harness.
The team hung flyers and posted his photos on all the local lost-and-found sites, hoping an owner would come forward.
They wanted nothing more than to reunite the sweet dog with the family he had lost.
Turning The Corner Toward A New Beginning
When no one stepped forward to claim him, the rescue team knew they had to start planning for his future.
They officially turned the corner, shifting their focus toward finding Adobe a foster or adoptive home.
Their goal is to move him out of the shelter environment and into a comfortable space where he can thrive.
