Every month or so, Viveca makes a special trip to her local animal shelter in New York.
She arrives ready for what she calls a “borough break,” eager to give the dogs a moment of joy and relief outside their kennels.
Her main goal is simple but vital: to shine a bright light on the shelter’s long-stay residents.
She focuses her efforts on the dogs who have been waiting the longest, hoping to change their luck.

She makes sure to show off what great walkers they are, proving to potential adopters what wonderful pets they would make.

The Very Last Kennel
Her deep dedication to these overlooked animals all started when she met one very special dog.
As she walked through the shelter one day, she noticed a dog named Mochi.
He was tucked away in the very last kennel in one of the sections.
Unlike the dogs jumping at the kennel doors for attention, Mochi just sat there quietly.
Heading Home
His calm and unassuming presence immediately stood out to Viveca.
She knew she had to give this overlooked pup a chance, so she decided to take him home.
Moving into a real home can be an overwhelming experience for a shelter dog.
For Mochi, it took about two days for him to fully decompress and get completely comfortable in his new surroundings.
A Silly Smile Emerges
Once he realized he was safe, Mochi’s true personality blossomed beautifully.
Viveca quickly learned that he had been himself from the start, just waiting for the right environment to shine.
He proved to be an incredibly silly and goofy dog.
Viveca loved coaxing out his big, joyful smile, calling him her “little angel.”
Advocating for Bully Breeds
Adopting Mochi sparked a powerful new passion in Viveca’s heart.
Ever since bringing him home, she has been advocating hard for bully breeds.
She knows how misunderstood they can be and wants the world to see their true, loving nature.
She also continues to do a lot of dedicated work at the shelter to help other dogs just like him.

Viveca believes that all these shelter dogs want is a second chance at life.
She promises that if you are willing to offer them love and attention, it will come back to you tenfold.
Today, she looks at Mochi’s wide, happy smile and feels an overwhelming sense of gratitude.
