When Heaven was found as a stray in Michigan, the world felt like a big, scary place. But with patience, love, and a tiny orange apron, this shy pup blossomed into a smiling adventurer.

“I joke that Heaven doesn’t realize that she’s a dog and not my actual child,” her mom happily admits.

Today, Heaven is a joyful, adventurous Michigan pup who loves sitting in her mom’s lap while sliding down snowy hills.

When she’s done riding down, she eagerly runs back up the hill, pulling the sled behind her as she waits for her mom to catch up.

But the confident, smiling dog she is today is a stark contrast to the terrified stray she once was.

Heaven’s story started with a lot of uncertainty after she was found as a stray.

A local rescue stepped in to help, but they desperately needed a foster home to give her a safe place to land.

That was when her future mom saw Heaven’s picture on Facebook and immediately felt a connection.

She agreed to take the dog in, not knowing just how much work it would take to heal the pup’s spirit.

It didn’t take long for the foster arrangement to turn into something much more permanent.

“I saw Heaven’s picture on Facebook and just fell in love,” her mom recalled.

“That’s when I ended up saying I would keep her forever.”

However, love alone wasn’t enough to instantly erase Heaven’s deep-rooted fears.

A Big, Scary World

In the beginning, Heaven was incredibly shy and hesitant about everything.

“To her, the world felt like a big, scary place,” her mom explained.

She did not love going outside, and even simple walks were an overwhelming challenge.

Her mom knew she had to take things incredibly slow if Heaven was ever going to feel safe.

To help Heaven adjust, her mom started with tiny, manageable outings.

They would take little trips outside that only lasted 5 to 10 minutes at a time.

Once Heaven realized her mom was always going to be there, she slowly began to trust her.

Together, they built their way up to longer adventures, looking for safe indoor spaces to practice.

One of their absolute favorite places to practice socialization was the local Home Depot.

The large aisles and steady foot traffic provided the perfect environment for a nervous dog.

They would go inside, find a quiet spot out of the way, and just sit together.

From the safety of her mom’s side, Heaven was allowed to just watch the world go by at her own pace.

The staff at the hardware store quickly noticed the shy dog and went out of their way to be welcoming.

They would sit down on the floor to get right on Heaven’s level, ensuring they weren’t intimidating.

A couple of months into their visits, the employees did something incredibly special: they gave Heaven her very own miniature orange apron.

“It almost like gave her confidence,” her mom said. “She had her apron on, she was going to see her friends.”

That little boost of confidence changed everything for the once-terrified stray.

Now, she loves going out to see people, whether it’s riding in a playground swing or pulling a sled in the snow.

“Heaven of the past and Heaven now are these two totally different dogs,” her mom shared.

Everywhere they go, strangers can’t help but notice the joyful pup, always stopping to say, “Oh my gosh, that dog is smiling.”
