California Dog Suffered A Heartbreaking Loss, But One Surviving Puppy Helped Her Find Joy Again
A pregnant California dog named Nala was completely shut down when she arrived at her foster home. After a heartbreaking loss, one surviving puppy helped this exhausted mama find her joy again—and discover a hilarious new hobby.
A Desperate Situation
Time was running out for a heavily pregnant stray dog who desperately needed a safe place to land.
When local mechanics spotted her, they noticed her breathing was super labored and she seemed incredibly uncomfortable. They knew she was going to give birth at any minute.
Worried that her puppies would freeze without proper shelter, the mechanics immediately reached out to a rescue for help. Thankfully, The Cantu Foundation stepped in to save her.
Shut Down and Scared
By the very next day, the exhausted dog—now named Nala—was placed into a loving foster home.
However, the trauma of her past was still weighing heavily on her. When she first arrived at the house, she was completely shut down and refused to leave her bed.
Her foster mom, Ilima, had to get creative just to help her go to the bathroom. “I literally had to physically drag the entire pen outside of my garage,” Ilima recalled.
A Gentle Turning Point
Slowly, Nala’s foster family began to earn her trust by luring her out with food. Finally, the sweet dog was starting to see the light of day.
Just a little over a week into her stay, Nala made a heartwarming breakthrough. She walked over to Ilima on the couch and gently rested her head on her lap.
She looked up at her foster mom as a true source of comfort. “That was when I was like, ‘This is my girl,'” Ilima shared.
A Heartbreaking Loss
Shortly after settling in, Nala gave birth to a large litter of 10 babies.
Tragically, the celebration was short-lived. Because Nala had been so severely malnourished on the streets, her puppies didn’t have a strong chance of surviving.
One by one, they slowly started losing the fragile newborns. It was a devastating time for both Nala and her dedicated foster family.
One Little Miracle
Despite the immense heartbreak, there was a glimmer of hope. One little miracle baby managed to pull through.
The family poured all of their love and energy into focusing on Nala’s one strong puppy. They named the little survivor Mufasa.
As he grew, Mufasa proved that he had plenty of spirit to make up for his small size. “My goodness, he was a little firecracker,” Ilima said.
A Well-Deserved Break
Nala proved to be an amazing, attentive mother to her only puppy. But keeping up with a handful like Mufasa was exhausting work.
Eventually, the tired mama realized her baby was strong enough to thrive on his own. She decided it was time to take a step back and finally relax.
“I think that after a while, she was just like, ‘You know what? You’re good. I know you’re going to make it,'” Ilima joked. That was exactly when Nala discovered the magic of television.
The Tech-Savvy Mama
Nala quickly developed a hilarious obsession with watching screens. She was captivated by the big screen TV, iPads, and even iPhones.
Her foster mom couldn’t help but laugh at the dog’s new hobby, often joking that Nala was sitting too close to the screen and would ruin her eyes.
Amazingly, Nala even figured out how to control the devices herself. She would walk up to a screen and touch it with her nose to skip to the next video if she didn’t like what was playing.
Living in Paradise
When the time was right, the rescue was able to find the most amazing, perfect family to adopt little Mufasa.
With her puppy safely in his new home, Nala was finally ready to embrace her own happily ever after. Ilima knew she couldn’t imagine her in any other home, so she officially adopted Nala herself.
Today, Nala has perfectly leveled out the energy of Ilima’s pack, acting as the calm, older mama who looks out for everyone. After such a hard journey, she now gets to live out the rest of her life in pure paradise.
