California Rescuer Promised He Wouldn’t Keep This Anxious Dog, But One Sweet Moment Changed Everything
A Familiar Foster Mantra

Every seasoned animal foster in California knows the famous last words of rescue. Before even getting the dog settled, this rescuer could be heard repeating a familiar phrase.
“I’m not keeping him,” he chanted over and over. “I’m not keeping him.”
It was meant to be a strict boundary. He was just providing a temporary landing pad for a dog in need.
Reading the Warning Labels

The dog came with a specific set of behavioral notes. According to his previous evaluations, he was dealing with significant anxiety.
The paperwork noted that he didn’t like loud noises or busy areas. He was food motivated, but he struggled with anxiety in new places.
Most importantly, the notes came with a strict warning about his preferences: he preferred women and reportedly did not like men.
An Immediate Connection

Despite the warnings that the dog was fearful of men, their initial meeting told a completely different story.
The strong, imposing dog immediately gravitated toward his male rescuer. The instant bond was undeniable.
“You like my feminine side, huh?” the rescuer joked, surprised by how quickly the dog felt comfortable in his presence.
Heading to a Temporary Home

With the first hurdle cleared, it was time to get the dog out of the stressful environment and into a real home.
The rescuer knew the dog was incredibly strong, but he was optimistic about the transition.
His biggest hope was that the new arrival would do well with the other dogs waiting at home.
Welcome to the Pack

Arriving at the property, the rescuer gently guided the dog, whom he called Brutus, into his new surroundings.
“I can’t wait to show you your new home,” the rescuer told him, quickly adding the word “temporary” to keep his own boundaries in check.
He walked the dog through the yard, asking softly, “Are we home, Brutus? Are we home?”
Proving the Notes Wrong

It didn’t take long for the dog to settle into his new life. By the end of the very first day, he was already thriving.
The rescuer was amazed by his progress. “This is so cool, day one, and they said he didn’t like men,” he marveled.
The anxious, fearful dog described in the paperwork was nowhere to be found. Instead, he was relaxed, happy, and soaking up the affection.
The Ultimate Foster Fail

As the days passed, it became clear that this “temporary” setup was anything but. The bond between the man and the dog was too strong to break.
Eventually, the rescuer sat down to make an official announcement to his supporters. “I just want to let you know that we found Hooch his forever home,” he shared.
Smiling, he revealed that the dog’s forever home was right there with him. The dog who supposedly didn’t like men had officially become a permanent part of the Asher House family.
