New York Woman Keeps A Secret Family In Her Barn, And Leaving Every Night Breaks Her Heart

When a New York foster mom heard about a deaf dog waiting in a loud shelter, she knew she had to step in. Because of her own dog’s reactivity, she set up a special sanctuary in a restored barn, leading to a beautiful, emotional daily routine.

A Striking Resemblance

The foster mom was fully prepared to take a well-deserved break from animal rescue. Fostering dogs is a deeply rewarding but emotionally exhausting journey, and she simply needed some time to recharge.

But in the world of rescue, the animals in need rarely check your schedule. When she heard about a special dog waiting in a local shelter, her plans for a hiatus vanished.

The dog’s name was Sky. When the rescuer saw her, she was immediately struck by how much the sweet pup resembled her own deaf dog, Jasmyne.

Knowing firsthand the unique challenges of caring for a hearing-impaired dog, her heart ached at the thought of Sky sitting in a confusing shelter environment. Without a second thought, she packed up her car and brought the beautiful dog home to her farm.

Bringing Sky to the farm was a lifesaver, but it came with a significant logistical challenge that needed to be addressed immediately.

The rescuer’s own dog, Jasmyne, can exhibit highly reactive behavior toward dogs she doesn’t know. To keep everyone safe and stress-free, the two dogs needed to be kept completely separated.

The solution was a beautifully restored barn on the property. It was spacious, quiet, and entirely separate from the main house.

For now, Sky would have this massive, cozy space all to herself, acting as her own private sanctuary while she decompressed from shelter life.

Despite living in the barn, Sky’s days are filled with adventure, exercise, and plenty of canine companionship.

Every morning, her foster mom comes out to greet her, often bringing along another friendly resident dog named Joey to help start the day on a positive note.

The trio heads out for long, peaceful hikes on the local trails surrounding the farm.

Sky’s absolute favorite destination is the pond. She spends her time watching and trying to catch frogs, inevitably getting as muddy as possible before it’s time for breakfast.

The Hardest Goodbye

After their morning adventures and a hearty breakfast, the hardest part of the day arrives. It’s time for the foster mom to return to her main house and her other dogs.

Leaving the barn is a daily heartbreak. “I’m sorry, Sky. I wish I could bring you home with us,” she whispers as she heads out the door.

Sky watches her go, settling back into her cozy barn space to rest after her busy morning.

“It’s hard for me to leave her,” the rescuer admits, knowing that this affectionate dog deserves to be in the center of a bustling family home.

The Joy Of The Wake-Up Call

Because Sky is completely deaf, she rarely hears her foster mom returning to the barn later in the day.

This leads to some incredibly endearing discoveries. The rescuer often finds Sky fast asleep in the weirdest positions and the most unexpected places around the barn.

Sneaking up on a sleeping deaf dog requires a gentle touch, but the reaction is always worth the effort.

Without fail, the moment Sky wakes up and realizes her favorite person is there, she erupts into pure, unbridled excitement.

Mastering A Silent Language

To help Sky thrive, her foster mom dedicates time every single day to special enrichment activities designed specifically for a deaf dog.

One of the most important parts of their routine is working on sign language cues, giving Sky the tools she needs to communicate in a silent world.

Sky is a brilliant and eager student, soaking up the training with enthusiasm and a wagging tail.

When she isn’t practicing her signs, she gets to tag along on errands. She is a highly social dog who absolutely loves meeting new people out in the community.

The Secret Family

As the sun sets over the farm, the barn transforms into a quiet, intimate space for just the two of them.

Sky turns into the ultimate cuddle buddy, soaking up all the evening affection her foster mom has to give before the night ends.

But eventually, the rescuer has to walk back to the farmhouse to care for her other three dogs, leaving Sky behind to sleep.

“I feel like I live this double life where I have this secret family on one side of the farm that the other family doesn’t really know much about,” she confesses.

Waiting For The Perfect Match

The bond between the two is undeniable, and the rescuer admits she would love nothing more than to keep Sky forever.

However, with three dogs already in her care, she simply doesn’t have the capacity to add another permanent member to her pack.

Instead, she is pouring all her love into preparing Sky for the perfect forever home, making sure she is confident, trained, and happy.

She knows that whoever adopts this wonderful, adventurous, and loving deaf dog is in for a beautiful journey. “She’s going to change their lives,” she says with a smile.
