Blind Ohio Puppy Was Taken To A Vet At Just Six Months Old After His Owners Said They No Longer Wanted Him
After surviving two rejections and a heartbreaking euthanasia request, a blind Ohio dog named Horace was given one last chance at life. He just needed someone willing to see past his fears.
Born Into Darkness
Some dogs have to fight for their happy ending from the very moment they enter the world.
Horace was born completely blind, a condition that required him to have his eyes removed while he was still just a puppy.
Despite his challenging start to life, he was eventually adopted out to a family.
Unfortunately, his first home would not provide the safe haven that a special-needs puppy desperately required.
An Unthinkable Choice
When Horace was only six months old, his original owners made a devastating decision.
They brought the young, blind puppy to a veterinary clinic with the intention of having him euthanized.
The owners claimed that he was being aggressive and simply decided they didn’t want him anymore.
Thankfully, the veterinarian refused to end the young dog’s life and stepped in to find him another place to go.
Scars Of Survival
Horace’s second living situation lasted until he was two and a half years old, but it was far from a peaceful environment.
He lived alongside other dogs, a situation that left the blind pup absolutely terrified.
He carries quite a few physical scars on his body from this period of his life.
His future rescuer suspects he was likely forced to fight for his food, leading to defensive behaviors that caused his second home to say they didn’t want him anymore either.
A Last Chance At Life
With nowhere left to go, Horace was entirely out of options.
The people housing him contacted a local animal rescue as a last chance at life for the misunderstood dog.
The rescue then reached out to a compassionate foster who was willing to give Horace a try.
They set up a standard three-day trial, allowing Horace to step into a new home just to see how things would go.
Finally Feeling Safe
To everyone’s relief, the three-day trial was a massive success.
The connection between Horace and his new owner was instant, and they got along wonderfully from the very beginning.
For the first time in his life, Horace felt truly at home and entirely loved.
Seeing the previously terrified dog become totally calm, comfortable, and safe meant the absolute world to his new family.
Unlikely Reptile Friends
Because of his past trauma, Horace’s owner makes sure to keep him away from other dogs, which still frighten him deeply.
However, Horace is far from lonely in his new home.
His owner happens to keep non-venomous snakes as pets, and surprisingly, Horace gets along incredibly well with them.
One of his best friends is a ball python named Tim, who is described as one of the sweetest, most chill snakes you could ever have.
Relaxing With His Companions
When Horace interacts with the snakes, his owner is always right there to ensure both the dog and the reptiles are completely comfortable.
The blind dog feels so incredibly safe around his slithering siblings that he actually wants to flop over and relax while Tim crawls on him.
He also shares a special bond with another, slightly larger snake in the house named Walter.
His owner finds it amazing to watch a dog who was once terrified of his own kind get along so beautifully with an entirely different species.
Waiting For Grandma
Horace’s intelligence and sensitive hearing have led to some adorable household quirks.
If his owner even spells out the word “h-e-r-e” in reference to his grandma, Horace will immediately bolt to the front door.
He has actually memorized the specific sounds that his grandma and grandpa’s cars make when they pull into the driveway.
The moment he hears their engines, he is right at the door waiting, usually holding a specific toy that his grandparents bought just for him.
Managing A New Medical Hurdle
Life hasn’t been entirely without its bumps in the road since Horace found his forever home.
He was recently diagnosed with epilepsy, adding another layer to his special-needs care.
To manage his condition, he now takes medication five times a day, including a dose in the middle of the night.
Despite the demanding schedule, his owner accepts it as just a part of who he is and wouldn’t trade him for the world.
Kindred Spirits
Looking back at the dog who was almost euthanized at six months old, it is hard to believe how far Horace has come.
He went from an unwanted, terrified pup fighting for his food to a cherished family member who loves snakes and waits for his grandparents.
His owner often jokes that the two of them must have known each other in another life.
