California pup Miles spent the first two years of his life confined to a laboratory cage. When he finally experienced freedom, he had to learn how to be a dog—starting with finding his voice.
A Lonely Beginning
For the first two years of his life, a sweet beagle named Miles knew nothing but the inside of a laboratory.
He was confined to a cage, living a lonely existence completely cut off from the warmth of a loving home.
That all changed when he was finally rescued from the facility by the Beagle Freedom Project.
A kind-hearted woman named Jessica decided to take him in, hoping to show him what a real life could look like.
The Weight of the Past
When Miles first arrived at Jessica’s home, the trauma of his past was evident in his behavior.
He was incredibly quiet, unsure of how to navigate this vast new world outside of a cage.
Jessica noticed that whenever she picked him up, his little body would just go limp.
“With testing Beagles, they talk a lot about how submissive they are,” Jessica explained, wondering if his reaction was a lingering effect of his time in the lab.
A Hoarse Little Howl

Letting Go of Old Habits
As he settled in, some of his old coping mechanisms from the lab began to surface.
When he first arrived, Miles had a habit of shredding paper whenever he found it.
Jessica suspected that in his previous conditions, he might have been given newspaper in his cage and shredded it just to combat the intense boredom.
Now, instead of shredding paper, he was learning that toys were much more fun.
Making Up For Lost Time
It quickly became clear that Miles was desperate for the love he had been denied for so long.
He proved to be incredibly friendly, eager to connect with anyone who crossed his path.
When a carpenter came over to take measurements at the house, Miles immediately fell in love with him.
The sweet beagle spent the whole visit lying down and showing his belly, begging the worker for belly rubs.
A Joyful Chaos
As Miles truly began to experience his freedom, his personality blossomed in hilarious ways.
He went through what Jessica called a “toddler” phase, running around the house in bursts of joyful energy.
As he ran, he would grab random things, leaving a trail of happy chaos in his wake.
He eventually calmed down, but he never lost the “permanent puppy eyes” that melted Jessica’s heart.
The Best Birthday Gift
Jessica’s original plan was simply to foster Miles until he could find a forever family.
