For most people, waking up means hitting the snooze button and quietly slipping out of bed. For California dog dad Steve, mornings are a beautifully chaotic group effort.
He currently shares his home with nine senior dogs, all of whom have found a safe haven under his roof. And the dogs aren’t the only ones keeping him company.
They all sleep right there with him, along with a special feathered friend named Betty the chicken. Together, they form one big, unconventional family.
The Staircase Ritual
Every single morning, the pack follows the exact same ritual. Once everyone is awake, it is time to make the journey down the stairs to start the day.
Because these are senior dogs, moving around takes a little more time and care. The stairs can be a daunting obstacle for older legs.
Steve usually carries two of the dogs in his arms while three others—Ortha, Sturgill, and Alice—bravely follow along on their own. Once the first group is safely downstairs, he heads right back up to carry down the rest.
A Medical Morning
Once the whole crew is on the ground floor, the real work begins. Taking care of nine senior dogs requires a lot of patience and a very organized medical routine.
Steve starts with their medications, making sure everyone gets exactly what they need. He changes diapers, administers eyedrops, and gently coaxed the more stubborn pups, like Fernanda, into taking their pills.
Even Bikini the pig, who sleeps in her own special area, joins the morning huddle. She waits patiently during the process so she can take her own medicine, too.

The morning routine doesn’t end inside the house. Once the dogs and Bikini are cared for, Steve heads outdoors.
He steps out into the yard to say a cheerful good morning to the rest of his rescue crew. The outdoor enclosures are full of life.
Turkeys, chickens, and rabbits all wait eagerly for his arrival. It is a peaceful, bustling sanctuary where every animal is treated with love.
