California Dog Struggled With Her Fears, Then One Unique 14-Week Program Changed Everything
When a reactive rescue dog named Lana entered a California prison’s training program, she didn’t just learn how to overcome her fears—she helped the men caring for her rediscover their own humanity.
A Dog Hiding Her Fears

When Lana first arrived in her caretaker’s life, she seemed like a wonderfully goofy pup.
She was super quirky and full of playful energy.
But as the sweet dog settled into her new environment, a different side of her personality began to emerge.
She became increasingly insecure, and it soon became clear that her behavior was stemming from a deep place of fear.
A Scary Turning Point

Lana’s insecurities eventually boiled over into reactivity.
Her caretaker knew that dogs could bite, but had never actually experienced it firsthand.
It was a terrifying moment to watch a dog they loved so much attack another dog out of pure fear.
That frightening incident was the catalyst that pushed them to seek professional training for Lana.
Overcoming the Reactivity

With dedicated training, Lana began to work through her deep-seated anxieties.
The process took time, patience, and a lot of understanding.
Slowly but surely, the fearful dog started to build her confidence and trust in the world around her.
Eventually, her reactivity was pretty much gone, opening the door for a brand-new chapter in her life.
Next Stop: Tehachapi State Prison

Because of the incredible progress she had made, Lana’s trainers knew she would be perfect for a very special initiative.
She was selected to participate in the Pawsitive Change Program.
Her next stop was Tehachapi State Prison in California.
It was an environment that might seem intimidating to some, but it was exactly where Lana was meant to be.
The 14-Week Journey

The Pawsitive Change Program pairs rescue dogs with incarcerated men for a transformative experience.
During the 14-week program, the dogs actually live inside the prison with their handlers.
The men are taught the very basic foundations of dog training.
Lana became a proud participant in this immersive, life-changing journey.
The Princess of the Prison

Inside the prison walls, Lana’s presence had an immediate and profound impact.
She brought a sense of joy and peace to an otherwise rigid environment.
When she came running into the room, the men treated her like a little princess.
Everybody loved Lana, and her sweet nature brought out the inner child in the men who cared for her.
A Shared Understanding

There was a deeper reason why the men connected so strongly with Lana.
The program leaders would ask the men to raise their hands if they could relate to Lana’s past reactivity.
They asked who else had ever made an impulsive decision in a moment of frustration or confusion.
Everyone would laugh and raise their hands, realizing that Lana’s anxieties and unique traits mirrored their own struggles.
A Return to Humanity

The men quickly realized that the program was about so much more than just dog training.
Before Lana arrived, some of the men felt they had become desensitized to their own emotions after years of incarceration.
Lana represented structure and unconditional love.
Through their connection with the dogs, the men found a true return to their own humanity.
Growth and Gratitude

Working with Lana taught her handlers self-awareness and helped them build their own confidence.
One handler shared that interacting with her was the first time he had felt a true sense of happiness in many years.
He hopes that when he is eventually released, he can have a good dog just like her.
Thanks to a once-fearful dog, these men are experiencing real growth and change, proving that everyone deserves a second chance.
