Presa Canario and Cane Corso are two powerful and protective types of the Mastiff breed. However, they are still very different with respect to their temperament, physical characteristics, and needs. If you are planning to adopt any of these two, read through this article to find out if they are a good fit for your home.

Origins and History

Presa Canarios hails from the Canary Islands, while the Cane Corso originates from Italy. Both breeds have deep-rooted histories as working dogs used for the protection of livestock, though the Cane Corso has a stronger link to guarding and protection as they were used in battle by the Romans.

Both breeds are large, muscular, and intimidating, but the Presa Canarios are heavier than the Cane Corsi. The former tends to have a more boxy, hearty build, while the latter is leaner but still powerful. Both dogs have strong jaws and a commanding presence that makes them excellent guardians.

Temperament

The Presa Canario is known for its calm yet confident demeanor, but it can be more territorial. On the other hand, Cane Corsi are known for their affectionate behavior and are social with family. Although the Presa Canario can be cuddly, too, it has a much harder time adjusting to new humans and has more pronounced protective instincts.

Energy Levels

Although both breeds have high energy levels, Cane Corsi are more active and thrive on a daily exercise regimen that includes long walks or even runs. On the other hand, the Presa Canario requires moderate exercise but is content with less rigorous physical activity. Hence preferring a calm and quieter home.

Trainability

When raised with positive reinforcement, Cane Corsi can show high intelligence levels. The Presa Canario is also smart but may exhibit stubbornness, requiring a more experienced handler to manage training challenges. In contrast, obedience training is smoother with Cane Corsi as they have a willingness to please.

Guarding Instincts

Presa Canarios were historically bred to protect livestock and even assist in hunts. As a result, they have a fierce guarding instinct. However, they are still more sociable than the Presa Canarios who are often more reserved and may be less accepting of strangers, as they were once used to fight in wars alongside Romans.

Coat and Grooming

Both breeds have similar short and coarse coats, which make them relatively easy to groom. A regular brushing is enough to manage shedding for both. The Presa Canario’s coat is slightly rougher, but both breeds require minimal maintenance. If you don’t want to spend too many dollars on pet saloons, these breeds are for you!

Health Concerns

Hip and elbow dysplasia are common in both these breeds due to their similar size and structure. They may also suffer from entropion, which can affect their eye health. The Cane Corso may also suffer from heart problems, but regular vet visits and a balanced diet help mitigate these risks.

Apartment Living

Due to their size, both breeds are better suited to homes with ample space, as they can develop joint issues without proper physical activity. However, Cane Corsi can adapt to apartment living with sufficient exercise. Presa Canarios prefer a quieter, more controlled environment, so they may struggle in busy buildings.

Interaction with Other Pets

Cane Corsi are easily sociable and tend to get along better with other pets, especially when raised with them. On the contrary, Presa Canarios can exhibit more dominance and territorial behavior. To ensure both breeds coexist peacefully with other animals, early socialization is essential for their safety.

Suitable for First-Time Owners

Neither breed is ideal for first-time dog owners. Cane Corso, while more trainable, still requires an experienced handler. Presa Canarios are even more challenging due to their independent and sometimes stubborn nature. If you are a new pet owner, it is best to go for an easier and more manageable breed.

Adaptability

When it comes to adapting to different environments, Cane Corsi excel. They can comfortably adjust to homes with children and other pets, although some socialization is recommended. Conversely, Presa Canarios are best suited for experienced owners who can provide a consistent, controlled environment to meet their needs.

Costs of Ownership

Due to their size and health needs, both breeds can be expensive to maintain. However, since Presa Canarios are rare in certain regions, they might come with a higher price tag. Since both breeds are equally susceptible to certain health conditions, vet bills are an important cost to consider as well.

Food and Dietary Needs

These breeds require high-quality, protein-rich diets to maintain their muscular builds. Cane Corsi may need more food due to their higher energy levels, while Presa Canarios can maintain a healthy weight with slightly less calorie intake. Good nutrition is vital to protect both these breeds from developing common illnesses associated with them.

Lifespan

On average, Cane Corsi and Presa Canarios live for 10 years. Since they are both prone to developing certain diseases, the best way to prolong their lifespan is through proper care, a balanced diet, physical exercise and stimulation, and regular vet visits. These practices can greatly improve their quality of life and longevity.
