Florida Puppy Was Given Up After His Breeder Could No Longer Handle His Extensive Medical Care

A tiny dog Florida named Beans was born with a staggering list of medical conditions and a heartbreaking prognosis. But with the help of a dedicated medical foster, he is proving that every life is worth fighting for.

A Heartbreaking Prognosis

When a tiny puppy named Beans was born, the odds were immediately stacked against him. His small body was battling a multitude of severe physical and genetic conditions.

Veterinarians delivered a devastating prognosis to anyone willing to listen. They believed the fragile pup probably wouldn’t even survive to see his first birthday.

But one dedicated animal lover refused to let his story end before it even began. Carrie, a medical foster, decided to step in and give Beans a fighting chance.

A Surrender And A Second Chance

Beans was originally surrendered to a rescue by his breeder. The overwhelming genetic and physical issues he faced were simply too much for them to handle.

Because of the extensive care he required, the breeder could not financially support his medical needs. He was handed over, hoping someone else could help.

That’s when Carrie, working with the Suncoast Animal League, got the call. As soon as the tiny puppy came into the rescue, she knew exactly what she had to do. “I will take him home,” she decided instantly.

Making Himself Right At Home

Despite the upheaval in his young life, Beans showed incredible resilience from the very first day. He wasn’t scared or timid in his new environment.

Carrie was amazed by how comfortable he was right off the bat. He confidently explored his surroundings, completely unfazed by the transition.

“Okay, this is my new family, this is my new house, these are my new friends,” Carrie imagined him thinking. He was ready to embrace his new life with an open heart.

Facing A Long List Of Challenges

As Carrie and the veterinary team evaluated Beans, the true extent of his medical hurdles became clear. The list of his conditions was staggering.

They discovered he had hydrocephalus, scoliosis, spina bifida, and spinal cord syndrome. On top of that, he had shallow hip sockets—meaning he barely had hip sockets at all—along with kneecap issues.

His hydrocephalus also caused neurological problems, leading to daily seizure activity. Physically, his conditions gave him the appearance of having a small humpback.

Living A Pain-Free, Playful Life

Despite his physical limitations, Beans refused to act like a sick dog. He still runs, walks, and plays just like any other pup.

Carrie’s biggest priority was ensuring he wasn’t suffering. She consulted with a neurologist to discuss his quality of life and was relieved to learn he is not in any pain.

To help manage his hydrocephalus and balance, he takes a daily medication. Surprisingly, it’s an over-the-counter medicine, Prilosec OTC, whose active ingredient helps keep him steady on his feet.

A Beautiful Brotherhood

Beans isn’t navigating his special needs alone; he has a furry sibling named Hugo who understands him perfectly. The two dogs share an incredibly sweet bond.

Hugo knows that Beans struggles and isn’t as fast as he is. When the two of them play chase around the house, Hugo adjusts his speed for his little brother.

He will run ahead, stop, and wait patiently for Beans to catch up. Once Beans finally reaches him, Hugo takes off in the other direction, keeping the game going.

Spreading Love As A Therapy Dog

Carrie believes that society often overlooks dogs like Beans, assuming they aren’t valuable. But this tiny dog has proven he has so much to offer the world.

“I think that animals like this can teach us about compassion and kindness and love, empathy, resilience,” Carrie shared. He even helps socialize the new foster puppies Carrie brings home.

Beyond his own house, Beans is a certified therapy dog. He actively visits patients in hospitals and goes to schools, spreading joy wherever his little paws take him.

Surviving A Terrifying Setback

The journey hasn’t been without its terrifying moments. In September, Beans faced a severe medical crisis that required urgent treatment.

His body suddenly stopped working, and he had to undergo an emergency surgery. Carrie held her breath, hoping her little fighter had enough strength left.

In true Beans fashion, he came out of the surgery okay. He bounced back from the ordeal just as sassy and silly as he was before he went in.

A Foster Failure For All The Right Reasons

When Carrie first brought Beans home, she was told he was a hospice case. The plan was simply to keep him comfortable for whatever short time he had left.

But as she watched him embrace life, she made a permanent decision. There was no way Beans was ever leaving her house.

“I thought if his life is going to be short, I want to fill it with as much love and joy as possible,” Carrie explained. He officially became a permanent part of her family.

A Birthday Nobody Thought He’d See

Day by day, month by month, Beans continued to thrive under Carrie’s devoted care. He surpassed every timeline the doctors had given him.

Recently, the family celebrated a massive milestone: Beans’ second birthday. It was a day of pure joy for a dog who wasn’t supposed to make it to his first.

Carrie remains in awe of how he approaches every single day. He is a true warrior, constantly overcoming the odds and proving that every life is worth saving.
