Illinois Stray Could Barely Walk Beneath Matted Fur Until A Closer Look Revealed Something Staggering
When a severely matted dog was found wandering the streets of Chicago, she could barely walk. Thanks to a dedicated Illinois rescue team, she finally shed her heavy past.
A Heartbreaking Discovery

When a stray dog was discovered wandering the streets of Chicago, her true shape was completely hidden.
She was buried beneath a heavy, painful burden of severely matted fur. The massive tangles made it nearly impossible for her to move, leaving her trapped inside her own coat.
It was a heartbreaking sight for anyone who crossed her path. However, her difficult days on the streets were finally coming to an end.
Calling in the Rescue Team

The Chicago Police Department stepped in to help, transporting the struggling dog to local Animal Control.
Recognizing the severity of her condition, Animal Control immediately reached out for backup. They called One Tail at a Time, a local animal rescue organization.
Ally, a representative from the rescue, recalled the urgency of the situation. The team rushed over to get the dog, whom they named Sprout, safely into their care.
Unable to Walk Alone

When the rescue team first laid eyes on Sprout, the reality of her neglect was staggering.
The heavy mats pulled tightly against her skin, causing her an immense amount of discomfort. In fact, she couldn’t even walk on her own.
“She basically had to be lifted and carried by multiple people at a time,” Ally explained. They knew they had to act quickly to relieve her pain.
A Life-Changing Groom

Sprout was taken straight to the rescue’s veterinary team for immediate medical attention.
To keep her safe and comfortable, the staff performed a sedated groom. As the clippers worked through the dense armor of fur, the true scale of her burden was revealed.
In total, the veterinary team removed an astonishing 32.4 pounds of matted fur from the small dog’s body.
Stepping Into a New Life

Waking up from the procedure, Sprout was finally free. Without the heavy mats weighing her down, her true personality began to shine.
“Being free of all of her mats, she’s definitely become a different dog,” Ally noted. She was suddenly able to walk around comfortably and explore her surroundings.
Every day, the sweet dog started coming out of her shell more and more.
A Clean Bill of Health

Despite her rough past, Sprout proved to be incredibly resilient.
The rescue team estimates she is about two years old, and thankfully, she is in great physical shape. “Overall Sprout’s very healthy,” Ally shared.
The team doesn’t expect her to have any long-lasting health concerns from her time on the streets. Her soft, beautiful hair has already started growing back in.
Learning How to Be a Dog

While she waits for her forever family, Sprout is living in a loving foster home.
There, she is finally getting the chance to just be a normal dog. She has a sweet temperament and is slowly discovering the joys of playtime.
She has started playing with toys, stretching out, and happily rolling around on her back.
A Remarkable Resilience

Because Sprout has the traits of a guarding dog, her rescuers believe she will bond deeply with a tight inner circle of family members.
Looking back at the photos of how she was found, the team is amazed by how far she has come. Her ability to forgive and trust new people is truly inspiring.
Sprout is now safe, happy, and ready to embrace the beautiful second chance she so deeply deserves.
