New Mexico Dog Protected His Family Upstairs While They Had No Idea What Was Happening

A Terrifying Intrusion
Pancho was adopted into his loving family about eight years ago. To those who knew him, he was just a sweet, gentle companion who loved his people.
But when danger arrived at their front door, this loyal pup proved just how far he was willing to go to protect the family who had given him a second chance.
The peaceful atmosphere of their home was shattered when an armed intruder forced his way inside. Pancho’s family was downstairs at the time, completely unaware of the danger lurking above.

Desperate, they kept driving toward Albuquerque, which was nearly two hours away. They searched in vain for an open emergency clinic that could take him in.
With options running out and precious time slipping away, the family made the agonizing decision to turn their car around.
Turning Back Time
They drove all the way back north, hoping against hope that their brave boy would hold on. David feared the absolute worst during that incredibly long drive.
The only thing keeping Pancho alive in the backseat was the makeshift pressure bandage his dad had applied.
As a last-ditch effort, they decided to pull into a local animal shelter back in Española.
They rushed him through the doors, begging the staff to see if there was anything they could do to save him.
Slipping Away
The shelter staff rushed out to help the desperately injured dog. But the moment they removed the pressure bandage to assess the wound, the unthinkable happened.
The sudden loss of pressure caused Pancho to lose consciousness right there on the treatment table.

Miraculously, their relentless efforts paid off, and his chest began to rise and fall once more. His heart had started beating again.
Once he was stabilized, they rushed him into a lengthy emergency surgery to properly close the severe wound on his neck.
The Tail That Never Stopped
Despite the immense pain and terror he had just endured, Pancho’s true personality shone through the moment he woke up.
Shelter staff noted that he never showed an ounce of aggression toward anyone trying to help him. They described him as simply a “heart wrapped in fur.”
Even when he was hovering near the edge of life, every time someone said his name or called him a good boy, he responded.

A Hero’s Reunion
Once Pancho was out of surgery and stable, the clinic staff brought his family in to see him.
It was a deeply emotional moment for everyone in the room, especially since the medical team initially feared he wouldn’t survive.
