Nina’s appearance is so striking and unusual that it often turns heads. Because she has no hair and her mouth doesn’t fully cover her teeth, people are always curious about her breed.

When they take her to the vet and are asked what breed she is, Emily and Sean jokingly reply, “Chupacabra.” The clinic staff usually look confused until they actually see Nina, and then they completely understand the joke.

Curious about her true heritage, the couple did an Embark DNA test. The results revealed that Nina is the ultimate “super mutt.”

Her complex genetic makeup includes Doberman Pinscher, Collie, Mountain Cur, Pomeranian, Chihuahua, Boxer, Chow Chow, Pit Bull Terrier, small Poodle, Labrador Retriever, and German Shepherd.

Contributing To Veterinary Science

Nina isn’t just special to her family; she is also helping the veterinary community learn more about canine genetics. Vets believe her unique look is due to some sort of congenital defect.

Because her condition is so rare, Cornell University is actually doing a study on dogs like her. Nina is officially playing a role in veterinary science.

About every six months, Nina gets her blood work done. Her family then submits the samples to Cornell.

The university runs her samples through their system to perform detailed DNA sequencing, hoping to unlock the mysteries behind her unique physical traits.

Perfect Just The Way She Is

Today, Nina is a very happy, cuddly dog who has fully embraced her new life. The other dogs in the home seem to sense that she is a little different, treating her like a baby and lovingly cleaning her.
