For years, a beautiful Labrador Retriever named Lacy knew nothing but the inside of a puppy mill.

She spent her life constantly having babies, never getting the chance to just be a normal, loved dog.

Her life of exploitation came to an abrupt end when she suffered a ruptured uterus.

No longer able to produce puppies for profit, her breeder simply gave her up.

Overlooked and Overweight

At the shelter, Lacy faced a whole new set of heartbreaking challenges.

She was described as morbidly obese, weighing a little over 100 pounds.

Because of her severe weight issues, the sweet lab was having a very hard time getting adopted.

As time passed, it became clear that many people simply didn’t want to take on the responsibility of an overweight dog.

A Fateful Petfinder Search

Everything changed when a man named Jack was browsing Petfinder.

He came across Lacy’s profile and immediately felt a connection to the discarded dog.

“I just saw her really sad look in her eyes,” Jack recalled.

He knew he had to be the one to give her the loving home she had always deserved.

When Jack finally brought Lacy home, her true personality quickly began to shine through.

Despite her tragic past, she was incredibly affectionate.

Jack described his new companion as a “very sweet, loving couch potato.”

However, helping her shed the dangerous excess weight was going to be an uphill battle.

Jack faced a couple of unique challenges when trying to get Lacy to exercise.

Her body wasn’t used to moving, and the extra weight made walking difficult and tiring.

Often, she would just give up, sit down, and be incredibly stubborn.

There were times when Jack found himself having to carry his 100-pound dog just to get her a little ways down the path.

Slow and Steady Progress

Jack was determined to get Lacy healthy and show her what a good life truly looked like.

She had already won him over completely, so there was no going back.

Through patience and consistency, the first 20 pounds came off within the first year and a half.

As the weight dropped, Lacy definitely started moving a lot more.

Hitting Her Healthy Weight

Getting her from 80 pounds down to her goal weight took a little bit longer.

Jack had to be careful, especially since Lacy is an expert “beggar” when it comes to food.

Eventually, she reached a healthy 60 to 65 pounds.

Her energy levels skyrocketed, and she finally started living a happy, active life.

A Beautiful Transformation

Reflecting on the journey, Jack finds it incredibly rewarding to have helped her heal.

He knows that if she had stayed at 100 pounds, she likely wouldn’t have lived as many years.

Watching Jack put so much time, love, and patience into Lacy’s recovery is truly inspiring.

Her story is a beautiful reminder that rescue dogs aren’t looking for perfect people—they just need someone willing to believe in them.
