Terrified Alabama Stray Kept Outsmarting An Experienced Rescuer Who Thought She Would Need 3 Days

A seasoned animal foster thought catching a terrified stray would take just three days, but the clever Alabama dog had other plans that would ultimately change both of their lives.

It was supposed to be an ordinary trip to a local Walmart. But as Jasmine glanced across the sprawling parking lot, something unexpected caught her eye.

A little dog’s head suddenly popped up from the surroundings. He was small, alone, and clearly in need of help.

When Jasmine asked around, she learned a heartbreaking truth. This tiny stray had been surviving out in that harsh environment for at least a year or two.

From that day forward, the hunt to save him officially began. But the frightened dog wasn’t going to make it easy for her.

“Every time he would see me, he would look like he’d seen a ghost, and he would run off,” Jasmine recalled. It was clear that this dog was deeply fearful of people.

Stepping Into Uncharted Territory

Jasmine was no stranger to helping animals in need. She had been actively involved in animal rescue since 2014.

Over the years, she had fostered and rehabilitated around 45 different dogs. She knew how to heal them and how to find them loving homes.

However, this situation presented a brand-new challenge. Despite her extensive experience, she had never actually trapped a feral dog before.

Because of her background, she was initially optimistic about the timeline. “I thought I would have him in, like, three days,” she admitted.

The First Failed Attempt

Realizing that the dog was too scared to be approached by hand, Jasmine knew a trap was her only option.

She set up a standard trap, hoping her three-day prediction would hold true. But the clever little stray was cautious.

He tentatively stepped inside, but the mechanism wasn’t quite right for his size. The gate came down and gently bumped his “little booty.”

Startled by the contact, the dog immediately backed right out of the enclosure. The first attempt was officially a failure, and Jasmine knew she needed a better plan.

Outsmarted By A Clever Stray

Realizing she needed something bigger and better, Jasmine received a stroke of luck. Someone came forward and offered her the use of a specialized “Missy trap.”

By day 18 of the rescue mission, things were looking up. She had set up five trail cameras around the area so she could watch his every move.

Watching the monitors, Jasmine’s excitement spiked. “Oh my gosh, he’s going in, he’s going in, he’s going in, he’s in the back,” she remembered thinking.

But then, the trap’s magnet released the gate with a faint click. The dog heard the tiny sound and bolted out of the enclosure faster than she could imagine.

“He was outsmarting me left and right,” Jasmine said. The quick rescue had officially become a serious challenge.

A Test Of Patience

Despite the setbacks, Jasmine refused to walk away. “I’m not going to give up,” she promised herself.

She decided to completely change her strategy. Instead of trying to catch him immediately, she began a long process of conditioning him to trust the space.

For over 40 days, she left the trap completely unset. She committed to a grueling schedule, visiting the parking lot morning and night.

During each visit, she would put out brand-new, delicious food. Her only goal was to make him feel comfortable walking in and out of the metal frame.

Trusting Her Instincts

The tedious weeks of conditioning slowly began to pay off. On day 70 of the saga, Jasmine noticed a major breakthrough.

The little dog fully walked into the trap, completely relaxed, and began happily eating a meal of chicken.

Watching him, Jasmine felt a sudden wave of intuition. “Something in my heart told me, ‘Tonight’s the night,'” she said.

For the first time in over a month, she finally armed the trap’s mechanism. She went home, but she knew she wouldn’t be getting much rest.

To ensure she didn’t miss the crucial moment, she set her alarm to wake her up every 30 minutes throughout the night.

The sleepless night was agonizing, but Jasmine’s dedication was about to be rewarded. In the early hours of the morning, her phone alerted her to movement.

At exactly 5:03 a.m., the dog walked into the trap. This time, the gate closed securely behind him.

“Oh my gosh, I bolted out of here,” Jasmine recalled, rushing to the parking lot to finally secure the dog she had spent months pursuing.

By 6:00 a.m., she recorded a triumphant video update. “Hey, guys, it’s Jasmine. It’s 6:00 a.m. on Good Friday, and look who I just got,” she announced, showing the safely secured pup.

Choosing His Forever Home

The 71-day mission was finally over, but the dog’s new life was just beginning. Jasmine named the sweet survivor Wally.

After spending a month or so decompressing in her care, Jasmine had a realization. She couldn’t bear to part with the dog she had fought so hard to save.

She made the joyful decision that Wally’s final home would be right there with her and her family.

When asked what Wally would say if he understood everything she did for him, Jasmine had the perfect answer. “He would say, ‘Mom, I’m sorry I made you wait that long. Because I would have had this home and this life way long ago.'”
