It was supposed to be a quiet weekend away from their Texas home for one couple.

That all changed when a text message lit up the homeowner’s phone. Her next-door neighbor had reached out with a startling observation: there was an animal wandering around in her backyard.

Since both she and her husband were out of town, they immediately pulled up their home security cameras to see what was going on.

What they saw on the screen broke their hearts. A small, lonely creature was pacing the yard, howling into the air and looking incredibly sad.

A Wild Resemblance

Looking back through the footage, the couple realized the animal had been slipping in and out of their yard since Friday afternoon.

When people finally got a good look at the little wanderer, alarm bells started to ring.

With his pointy ears and wild features, everyone thought he looked exactly like a coyote puppy.

The homeowner texted her sister and her neighbors, and a wave of fear washed over the group. They were dealing with what they believed to be a wild animal.

Despite their fears, the neighborhood knew they couldn’t just leave the little guy to fend for himself.

A dark rainstorm was quickly blowing in, and the tiny creature was completely exposed to the elements.

Even though people thought they were crazy for trying to wrangle a suspected coyote, they decided they had to try to catch him.

Working together, they managed to bring the frightened animal safely indoors before the bad weather hit.

Once they got him inside the house, the reality of the situation set in.

The little animal was absolutely terrified of his new surroundings and the people trying to help him.

He immediately retreated into a kennel and refused to come out, choosing to hide in the safety of the small enclosure.

His rescuers gave him space, wondering if his wild instincts were keeping him guarded.

As the hours ticked by, the frightened creature slowly began to realize he was safe.

He finally stepped out of the kennel, and his behavior started to shift in a surprising way.

Instead of acting wild, he started chasing his rescuer and following her around the house.

His sweet, playful antics were undeniably cute, leading his rescuers to ask him, “Are you a dog?”

The Vet’s Verdict

To be absolutely sure about their new houseguest, they took him to the local veterinarian.

The vet examined the little guy and delivered the official news: he was definitely not a coyote.

He was just a unique-looking puppy who had somehow lost his way.

Relieved by the news, the couple named him “Yote” in honor of his wild beginnings.

The couple immediately went to work trying to find Yote’s rightful family.

They put up fliers around the community and posted his photo on all the neighborhood social media pages.

But as two weeks passed with no leads, they realized they probably weren’t going to find his owners.

At that point, the homeowner didn’t think she could keep him. She had recently lost a beloved dog and was still deeply heartbroken, feeling she had no room left in her heart for another animal.

The couple agreed to keep the puppy just until they could find him a proper forever home.

She gave Yote some toys, and his eyes lit up. He was so excited to play and just be a puppy.

Then, about four days into his stay, something beautiful happened.

In the middle of the night, Yote hopped up onto the bed to sleep beside her.

The Best Addition

In that quiet nighttime moment, she felt a wave of happiness knowing that Yote finally felt entirely safe.

Day by day, the little dog who looked like a coyote slowly chipped away at the walls around her grieving heart.

She often thinks about what his life would have been like if he hadn’t wandered into their yard that weekend.

Today, she is incredibly grateful that he found them, calling him the absolute best addition to their family.
