A Heartbreaking Discovery
Seeing a dog in a terrible state in Texas brings out a natural reaction in animal lovers: you just want to go up and give them a hug.
But for one terrified pup, human contact was the last thing she wanted.
She was found cowering in a doorway, so fearful of the world around her that she tried to bite anyone who attempted to touch her.
No Time To Wait
The rescuer on the scene knew immediately that the situation was critical and required urgent intervention.
“I was like, ‘This has got to be dealt with ASAP,'” the rescuer recalled.
At the time, there was still an ongoing discussion with the family about whether they could officially take the dog in, but walking away was simply not an option.
A Gentle Surrender
It took patience and a calm presence to break through the dog’s heavy defensive shell.
The rescuers had to prove they weren’t going to give up, and more importantly, that they meant her no harm.
“As soon as she figured out that we A: weren’t going to stop, and B: that we weren’t going to hurt her, she was quite happy to be just picked up,” the rescuer shared.
Ignoring The Discomfort
The physical toll of the dog’s neglect was obvious, particularly a severe tick infestation.
As the rescuer held the dog close to carry her away, the uncomfortable reality of the parasites set in.
“I’ve got my hair all amongst those ticks, but in the moment, you don’t really think about it,” the rescuer explained. The only thought that mattered was getting the dog out of there.
Learning To Trust Again
Once safely away from that lonely doorway, the dog’s healing journey truly began.
She was placed in the care of one of the rescue’s wonderful foster families.
In this new, warm environment, she was introduced to other dogs and cats, finally learning what it meant to be safe inside a home.
Loving Life
The transformation from a terrified, defensive stray to a joyful companion was nothing short of remarkable.
Eventually, the rescue received the most amazing home offer for her, securing her forever future.
“It’s just so nice, considering where she came from,” her rescuer reflected. Today, instead of cowering in fear, she is simply loving life and making everyone around her laugh.
