Frightened Dog Couldn’t Move Beside The Road, So A Washington Rescuer Tried An Unusual Solution
A drive past local Washington blueberry fields turned into a life-saving mission when a rescuer spotted a motionless dog with a severe injury, leading to a beautiful story of healing and a foster fail.
A Suspicious Shape By The Road

A Heartbreaking Realization

As she got closer, she could finally see the dog’s face. Every expression seemed to be silently calling out for help.
She spoke softly to the terrified animal, trying to offer some comfort. Hi, sweetheart. It’s okay, she reassured the trembling dog.
Then, the dog shifted her weight and turned. That simple movement revealed a devastating injury—her leg was badly broken.
A Makeshift Solution

Seeing how much pain the dog was in, the rescuer knew she had to act quickly but carefully. The injured pup was incredibly scared and vulnerable.
Without proper rescue gear on hand, she had to get creative. She unhooked a strap from her fanny pack to use as a makeshift slip-lead.
She approached slowly, praising the dog for being so brave. Surprisingly, the exhausted animal allowed her to slip the makeshift leash over her head.
Securing Safety

Earning the injured dog’s trust wasn’t a fast process. It took about 30 to 40 patient minutes to finally secure her.
Once the dog was safely contained, a massive wave of relief washed over the rescuer. She finally knew the sweet girl was safe and on her way to getting real medical help.
She immediately picked up her phone to call her boss at the Regional Animal Protection Society.
“I’m bringing a dog in,” she warned them. “You guys need to be ready.”
The Initial Exam

Upon arriving at the rescue facility, the veterinary team jumped into action. They carefully lifted the injured dog and performed an initial exam.
Despite the pain she was in, the sweet pup was an absolute angel. She was perfectly behaved and let the staff do everything they needed to do.
They scanned her for a microchip, hoping to find a worried family looking for her. Sadly, no microchip was found.
With nowhere else to go, the rescuer, Shena, decided to take the dog home with her for the night.
The Road To Recovery

Just two days after being rescued from the dirt, the dog underwent surgery to repair her broken leg. She did incredibly well and slowly came out of sedation.
Now officially named Blueberry—a nod to the fields where she was found—the sweet pie began her long healing journey.
The entire rehabilitation and recovery period was expected to take three long months.
Thankfully, Blueberry was a gentle and cooperative patient, making the challenging rehab process as easy as possible for her dedicated foster mom.
Meeting The Family

As Blueberry grew stronger, it was time to introduce her to the rest of the household. Shena orchestrated a very slow introduction with her resident dogs and cats.
The careful planning paid off, and the introductions went beautifully. But one family member stood out the most.
Shena’s cat, whom she lovingly calls her “Walmart greeter,” walked right up to the new dog. He immediately started rubbing all over her in a warm feline welcome.
Blueberry just sat there, soaking up the affection as if it were the best day of her life.
A Failed Foster, A Forever Home

Deep down, Shena knew Blueberry wasn’t going anywhere. Still, she tried to convince herself by repeating, “She’s a foster. She’s a foster.”
Her friends and coworkers saw right through the denial. They knew Blueberry and Shena were completely bonded and stuck together for good.
Looking back at the dog lying motionless in the dirt, it was incredible to see how far she had come. Despite going through horrible things, Blueberry emerged as a super loving companion.
The rescue mission that started with a fanny pack strap ended with a permanent family. “I’m happy to be Blueberry’s mom,” Shena proudly shared.
