Laura and her family in Ohio loved their sweet dog, Buttercup. She was a happy, active part of their bustling household.

But when Buttercup was just three years old, tragedy struck in the quietest of moments. While the dog was sleeping, a disc suddenly ruptured in her back.

The family rushed her to the veterinarian, and she immediately went into surgery. It was a terrifying time, but they were determined to do whatever it took to help her heal.

The Difficult Road To Recovery

Following the surgery, Buttercup faced a long and grueling recovery process. The family dedicated themselves to her rehabilitation.

They spent three months doing intense physical therapy with their beloved dog. They cheered her on daily, hoping to see signs of improvement.

Unfortunately, further investigation by her doctors revealed more bad news. Buttercup suffered from very severe hip dysplasia.

Complicated by the disc rupture, the veterinarians determined that she would probably never walk again.

Despite the heartbreaking prognosis, Laura and her family refused to give up on Buttercup’s happiness. They got her outfitted with a custom wheelchair.

Buttercup quickly learned how to scoot and ambulate to get wherever she needed to go. She proved to be incredibly adaptable.

For three long years, she relied on her wheelchair and her unique scooting method. The family fully accepted that this was her life now.

Most importantly, Buttercup wasn’t in any pain. As Laura noted, the sweet dog was still “living her best life.”

A Special Day For Kate

Buttercup has always shared a deeply special bond with Laura’s daughter, Kate. The two of them were practically inseparable.

In October 2021, a major milestone arrived for the family. Kate was having her high school senior portraits taken.

It was a beautiful outside photo shoot, and Kate knew exactly who she wanted by her side. She insisted that Buttercup be a part of the pictures.

The family brought Buttercup to the outdoor location, expecting her to simply sit with Kate for the photos as she always did.

The Miracle Moment

As the camera clicked, something completely unexpected happened. Buttercup decided she needed to be closer to her favorite person.

All of a sudden, the dog who hadn’t walked in three years just took off toward Kate. The entire family watched in sheer disbelief.

“We were just stunned that she was walking,” Laura recalled. They cheered her on, joyfully shouting, “Look at her go!”

Since that miraculous day, Buttercup has only gotten stronger and stronger. She completely beat the odds that the doctors had given her.

A True Family Effort

While Buttercup regained her mobility, she still required specialized daily care. The disc rupture had left her with lasting nerve damage.

The communication between Buttercup’s brain and her bladder remained disconnected. Because of this, she cannot go to the bathroom on her own.

Laura, her husband, and all of their children have learned how to manually express Buttercup’s bladder. They do this every four to five hours, every single day.

“It is truly a family effort,” Laura explained. They are incredibly proud of her resilience and are happy to provide the care she needs.

Spreading Joy To Others

Buttercup’s fighting spirit isn’t just reserved for her family. She has a natural gift for making everyone around her smile.

Before the pandemic, Laura and Buttercup would visit local nursing homes together. They loved spending time with the residents.

The sweet dog brought immense happiness and cheer to the folks living there. She was a beautiful little light in their daily routines.

Even though she faced her own physical challenges, Buttercup’s gentle presence was a comfort to everyone she met.

Today, Kate is away at college, but their bond remains as strong as ever. Whenever she comes home, Buttercup hops with joy, her face lighting up completely.

For Laura, who admits to being a natural worrier, Buttercup has been the ultimate teacher. The resilient dog has changed her entire outlook on life.

Buttercup taught her that life is too short to worry and that every single day is a gift to be cherished.

“She just gets up every morning with a positive attitude,” Laura shared. Now, Laura tries to channel her “inner Buttercup,” filling each day with kindness, good energy, and unwavering hope.
