Two Gentle Giants Wait On A California Property With Painful Clues To Their Past
When rescuers arrived to help a large Great Dane with an injured leg, they soon discovered a second giant dog lying in the driveway. Together, these gentle giants would finally get the break they deserved.
A Gentle Giant Approaches
When rescuers arrived at the California property, they were immediately approached by a very large Great Dane. Given her massive size, the team knew they had to be incredibly careful during their initial approach.
However, their worries quickly vanished. They realized right away that she was friendly and willing to let them handle her.
Despite her sweet greeting, it was clear she was in distress. The hot ground was burning her paws, and the rescuers had to hustle to get her off the scorching pavement.
An Injured Leg and a Rushed Rescue
“Hurry, hurry, hurry! Come on, baby!” a rescuer urged, guiding the massive dog to safety. They soon noticed that the sweet girl was also limping with an “ouchy leg.”
After securing the Great Dane, the team continued their search of the property. Walking down the driveway, they spotted something that made their hearts sink.
A large Mastiff was laying right in the middle of the driveway. She wasn’t getting up, and her lack of response immediately raised alarms for the rescue team.

The Heavy Lift to Safety
Moving a giant breed dog who cannot walk is no easy task. The team brought over a large transport carrier and prepared for a coordinated effort.
“Pull and push at the same time,” they instructed one another, carefully maneuvering the heavy dog into the crate. They spoke softly to her the entire time, reassuring her that she was safe.
With both gentle giants finally secured, they were loaded into the transport vehicle. They were taken straight to the shelter clinic for comprehensive exams and urgent medical attention.
Discovering Their Past
At the clinic, the veterinary staff praised the dogs for being so brave during their intake exams. The next step was scanning for microchips to uncover where these girls had come from.
The scans were successful, and the shelter was able to contact the dogs’ owner. It was then that they learned the heartbreaking truth about the dogs’ past.
Both the Great Dane and the Mastiff had been used for breeding. After years of producing puppies, they had finally reached a breaking point.
A Difficult Decision

The rescue organization “One Dane At A Time” heard about the bonded pair and immediately pulled both dogs from the shelter. They ensured the girls received all the necessary medical treatments to heal their neglected bodies.
A dedicated foster mom stepped up to take them in. “I knew I had to help them,” she explained. “There was just not a doubt in my mind that they needed a break finally in life.”
She welcomed both massive dogs into her home, ready to give them the soft beds and quiet space they had likely never known.
Learning to Love Harder
Fostering giant breeds comes with unique challenges. As their foster mom noted, Great Danes take up more space and certainly drool more, but they also have an incredible capacity for affection.
“I also think that they love more. They love harder,” she shared. For the first couple of weeks, the girls rested and slowly learned to trust their new environment.
It took about two weeks for their true personalities to emerge. When they finally started coming out of their shells and their tails began to wag, their foster mom knew they had fully decompressed—and that they were finally going to be okay.
