Heartbroken Florida Greyhound Sat In A Vet Clinic After A Door Accident Ended His Racing Career
Milo the greyhound lost his racing career to a tragic accident, but a call to a Florida foster family led him to an incredible new adventure on the open water.
A Devastating Accident
When a young greyhound named Milo was brought into a local veterinary clinic, his future looked incredibly bleak.
He had been in training at a track to become a race dog, but a sudden accident changed everything in an instant. His leg had gotten accidentally caught in a door, leaving him with a severe injury.
Unable to continue his training, the racetrack surrendered the young dog to the vet’s office.
At just 18 months old, Milo was far younger than most retired racing dogs, whose careers usually end around three or four years of age. His life on the track was over before it ever truly began.
A Call For Help
Knowing the sweet dog needed a safe place to heal, the vet’s office reached out to a local couple, Jack and Brad.
They called to ask if the couple would be interested in fostering a greyhound that had just been brought in.
When Jack arrived to meet the injured pup, the emotional toll of the ordeal was immediately obvious.
“The first time I met him, his soul was broken,” Jack recalled. “He looked so sad.”
Lingering Fears
Jack and Brad brought Milo home, but helping him adjust to life as a beloved pet was going to take time.
The young greyhound was deeply fearful of men, making his transition into the household a delicate process. It took months before he finally began to warm up to Brad.
Milo’s physical and emotional scars were also intertwined. While his leg was technically healing, the trauma lingered.
Whenever he found himself on a hard surface like a road, or anytime he felt nervous, Milo would instinctively pick his injured leg up off the ground.
The Strict Foster Plan
In the beginning, Jack was absolutely adamant that they were only going to foster Milo temporarily.
The couple had massive, life-altering plans on the horizon, and adding a permanent dog to the mix didn’t seem feasible.
They were preparing to move onto a sailboat and live entirely on the water.
Fostering was supposed to be a short-term commitment to help Milo heal before he found his forever family on land.
A Predictable Plot Twist
Despite Jack’s firm stance on keeping things temporary, Milo’s gentle presence was slowly working its magic.
As the months ticked by, the bond between the couple and the timid greyhound grew stronger.
“Apparently, everyone around us knew there was no way we were only gonna foster,” Jack joked.
After about six or seven months, the rescue group finally reached out for an update. Jack’s response was simple: “Oh, we’re keeping him.”
Trading Land For Water
With Milo officially part of the family, Jack and Brad moved forward with their dream of living on the ocean.
A year and a half ago, they sold their house, their cars, and everything else they owned in Miami.
They transitioned to living full-time on their boat, bringing their newly adopted greyhound along for the ride.
It was a massive change of scenery for a dog who had started his life at a dusty racetrack, but Milo was ready for the adventure.
Beach Days And Digging Games
Life on the coast turned out to be exactly what Milo needed to fully embrace his youth.
He absolutely loves running on the beach, and the soft sand gives him the confidence to run playfully on all four legs.
He also developed a hilarious new hobby. When he starts digging in the sand, Jack will say, “Dig, dig, dig,” and Milo will just keep going faster and faster, knowing it’s a game.
After he tires himself out, he gets a fresh water rinse on the boat and immediately crashes into a deep, peaceful sleep.
An Unconventional But Perfect Life
Milo still has his quirks. He remains a bit apprehensive around unpredictable things like squeaky toys and children, and he prefers to keep his distance in big crowds.
Living on a boat with a large dog also comes with its own unique set of hurdles, especially when navigating the rules of different countries.
Rough days at sea can be stressful for everyone, but the family wouldn’t trade their journey for anything.
“When I look into his eyes, I can see how happy he is,” Jack shared. “It’s good that we can give him a better life than he could have had.”
