California Senior Dog Was Running Out Of Time At The Shelter Because She Wouldn’t Let Anyone Touch Her
Whanda was so terrified of human contact that California shelter workers nicknamed her “Don’t Touch Me.” But a dedicated foster mom saw past the fear to heal her broken soul.
A Last-Resort Call for a Tiny Soul

When a tiny, frail dog was scheduled for euthanasia in the Los Angeles shelter system, her future looked incredibly bleak. She was terrified of the world, snapping and shrinking away from anyone who tried to offer her comfort.
Her spirit was completely shattered by whatever she had endured in her past. Weighing less than four pounds, she seemed to carry the weight of the world on her tiny shoulders.
But a last-resort rescue decided that her story wasn’t over yet. They stepped in to pull her from the brink, setting the stage for a transformation no one saw coming.
Carla and Ash, dedicated animal rescuers, received the urgent call about the senior dog. The LA shelter system was out of space, and the little dog was out of time.
As a last-resort rescue, their organization specializes in the animals who have nowhere else to go. They immediately brought the dog, named Whanda, into their foster program.
Ash stepped up to be Whanda’s foster mom, but she was entirely unprepared for just how fragile the little dog was.
The Heartbreak of a Broken Spirit

When Whanda first arrived at Ash’s home, she weighed a heartbreaking 3.9 pounds. The rescue estimated her to be between 12 and 17 years old.
Ash was terrified just handling her. “She just looked so tiny and frail, and I was so afraid of breaking her,” Ash recalled.
The physical neglect was obvious, but the emotional damage was even worse. As Ash noted, treating medical issues is one thing, but healing a broken soul is an entirely different challenge.
Earning the Name “Don’t Touch Me, Whanda”

Whanda’s fear of humans was deeply ingrained. During her time in the shelter, she had even earned the nickname, “Don’t Touch Me, Whanda.”
Every time Ash tried to gently examine or touch Whanda’s belly, the tiny dog would scream in absolute terror. The sound made Ash incredibly nervous, fearing she was causing the dog more trauma.
It was clear that Whanda needed time, patience, and a quiet space to realize she was finally safe. Ash committed to moving at Whanda’s pace, no matter how long it took.
A Quiet Breakthrough on the Sofa

Over the course of the first year, Whanda slowly began to understand that she was in a secure environment. The walls she had built around her heart started to crumble.
The major turning point happened on a quiet evening while they were relaxing together. Whanda and Ash were laying on the sofa when the senior dog did something completely unexpected.
She rolled over on her own and asked Ash to rub her belly. The dog who once screamed in terror at the slightest touch was now demanding affection, and she has insisted on nightly belly rubs ever since.
From Frail to Fearless

With her emotional walls down, Whanda’s true personality began to shine through. The frail, terrified senior blossomed into a surprisingly athletic little dog.
Ash marveled at her energy, joking that the tiny senior suddenly had “springs in her legs.” She was boldly exploring her new world, proving that age is just a number.
Despite missing a portion of her jaw, Whanda’s appetite returned with a vengeance. She had fully transformed from a fragile shelter dog into what Ash affectionately called a “busted love nugget.”
Bossing Around the Big Dogs

As Whanda grew more comfortable, her confidence skyrocketed. The once-timid dog became incredibly bossy and sassy around the house.
If Ash gave attention to anyone else, Whanda was instantly on the scene to demand her share. She quickly established herself as the ruler of the sanctuary.
Incredibly, this four-pound senior became known for chasing hundred-pound pit bulls away from their food dishes. She would even manage to eat their kibble right out of their bowls, completely fearless of her giant siblings.
A Bond That Couldn’t Be Broken

After a year and a half of fostering, the bond between Ash and Whanda had grown unimaginably strong. Ash realized she couldn’t imagine her life without the sassy little senior.
“We were always meant to be together,” Ash shared. She decided that Whanda would forever be a long-term foster at the sanctuary, ensuring the dog would never have to move again.
Whanda had found her forever home, surrounded by love, respect, and all the belly rubs she could ever want.
The Honor of Earning Her Trust

For Ash, the journey with Whanda has been a profound learning experience. She views the senior dog with deep respect, comparing her to a wise aunt who teaches her how to live in the moment.
“These animals are magic. They teach us so much. Don’t write ’em off,” Ash urged. Seeing a dog overcome such intense fear is a daily inspiration.
Knowing how terrified Whanda once was of human touch makes their current bond incredibly special. For Ash, having Whanda trust her enough to provide care and love is nothing short of an honor.
