Georgia Dog Waited Hunched Inside His Kennel With No Name And Not A Single Application

He was just a ‘big tan guy’ hunched down in a Georgia shelter kennel. But after a two-day journey to a new home, this sweet rescue dog ended up saving his adopter’s life in return.

A Nameless Soul In The Shelter

He was just hunched down in the shelter, looking incredibly sad.

On his paperwork, he didn’t even have a name. The staff had simply written down “big tan guy” to identify him.

Because he had received no interest or applications, his time was running out.

He was scheduled to be placed on the euthanasia list.

Scars Of A Hard Life

The dog had been picked up as a stray in Georgia in 2019.

Despite his rough condition, he was house-trained and knew basic commands, meaning he had likely known the warmth of a home at some point.

But the shelter staff believed he had been surviving on the streets for quite some time.

He was 20 to 25 pounds underweight, and the fur halfway down his back was missing due to fleas and sun damage.

A Two-Day Journey To Hope

As a bully breed in the southern United States, his chances of making it out of the shelter were statistically very low.

This is especially true for dogs who sit for weeks with no interest.

Fortunately, a lifeline appeared from miles away when he was tagged by Fly With Me Animal Rescue, an organization based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

They stepped in to save his life, embarking on a two-day drive from Georgia all the way up to Nova Scotia.

An Immediate Connection

When he finally arrived, a man named Mark and his fiance were waiting to adopt him.

They gave the sweet dog a name of his own: Dexter.

While many rescue dogs take a while to decompress in a new environment, Dexter was completely different.

He immediately bonded with his new family, jumping all over them and offering nothing but kisses and hugs.

Breaking The House Rules

Mark initially thought he would enforce a strict rule of no dogs on the couch or the bed.

But Dexter’s loving nature quickly melted his resolve.

Within the first two to three days, Mark was the first one to break his own rule.

One afternoon, his fiance came home from work to find Mark and Dexter sound asleep on the couch together.

A Gentle Giant And A Tiny Kitten

Dexter’s heart proved to be big enough for more than just his human parents.

He also loves to bring them little gifts. Whenever they leave for a quick errand and come back, Dexter greets them with a toy or a sock in his mouth.

In 2022, the family expanded when they adopted a 12-week-old kitten named Zoe.

Dexter proved to be incredibly gentle with the tiny feline, and the two are often caught cuddling and napping together.

Turning Prejudice Into Purpose

To Mark, Dexter is one of the friendliest dogs he has ever met.

Unfortunately, they still face negative stereotypes because Dexter is a tan pit bull.

While walking on a boardwalk one day, a senior woman made a cruel comment, telling them, “That thing’s gonna get you in your sleep one night, you know?”

Instead of getting angry, Mark channeled his frustration into action. He founded a page called East Coast Bully Advocates, which has since helped save the lives of hundreds of rescue dogs.

A Lifesaving Bond

The bond between Mark and Dexter soon became a vital source of healing.

Shortly after adopting Dexter, Mark was diagnosed with lupus and suffered a DVT blood clot in his leg.

His health journey became a difficult roller coaster, but through it all, Dexter has been his constant shadow.

Mark credits the dog with doing more for his mental health than any person or healthcare provider ever could.

Learning To Slow Down

Dexter is incredibly in tune with Mark’s energy and emotions.

Whenever Mark feels stressed or anxious, the dog picks up on it without a single word being spoken.

Dexter will come lay on him, forcing Mark to stop what he is doing and pet him until he feels better.

Before Dexter, Mark worked 70-hour weeks and was always on the go, but this special rescue dog taught him to slow down, take a breath, and finally appreciate the little things.
