Winslow was just a tiny, two-pound dog when he found himself alone in a crowded shelter. Estimated to be about eight to ten months old, the fragile pup was rapidly running out of time.

Shelter staff noted that he was having breathing issues, making him highly vulnerable in that environment. Because of his medical needs, they were only willing to hold him for a very short window.

His future looked incredibly bleak, and he was scheduled to be euthanized that very same day unless someone came to his rescue. Fortunately, a kindhearted woman named Gabby was about to step in.

Winslow had been brought in as a stray, a fact that Gabby found incredibly hard to believe. She suspected someone had dumped him, knowing a dog of his microscopic size couldn’t possibly survive on the streets.

With the clock ticking down on his final day, a dedicated shelter volunteer stepped up to temporarily take him home. As soon as Gabby heard he was safe for the moment, she rushed over to pick him up.

Despite the shelter’s concerns about his breathing, Winslow seemed perfectly fine when Gabby finally held him. He may have just been terrified by the loud, chaotic shelter environment.

An Interrupted Chicken Dinner

When Gabby first met Winslow at the volunteer’s house, the tiny dog was happily enjoying a meal of El Pollo Loco chicken. He was finally getting a taste of the good life.

Because he was so engrossed in his delicious meal, he was actually quite upset when Gabby scooped him up to take him to her car. He didn’t realize he was heading toward his forever home.

As they drove away, Gabby looked down at the tiny passenger. Something about his unique face and fragile body pulled deeply at her heartstrings.

Recognizing A Rare Condition

What truly drew Gabby to Winslow wasn’t just his desperate need for help. She recognized the specific physical traits of a terminal genetic disorder called Mucopolysaccharidosis type VI.

The condition causes short stature, which explained why Winslow weighed a mere two pounds. It also causes a swooped-up nose, an underbite, and severe leg deformities.

Beyond his unique appearance, the disorder affects nearly everything internally, from the eyes and GI system to the heart and lungs. Having cared for a dog with this exact condition before, Gabby knew exactly what she was signing up for.

Entering Big Boss Mode

The moment Gabby brought Winslow home, his true personality began to shine through. Despite his terminal diagnosis, he immediately went into what Gabby called “big boss mode.”

He strutted around the house, inspecting his new surroundings as if he owned the entire place. His ferocious, confident spirit completely overshadowed his two-pound frame.

He boldly ran around with Gabby’s much larger dogs, completely fearless. Sensing his fragility, the big dogs were incredibly gentle and patient with their tiny new brother.

Guinea Pig Sweaters And Snuggles

Because of his condition, Winslow had very little body fat to keep him warm. To keep him comfortable during the day, Gabby had to dress him in tiny shirts and sweaters.

Traditional dog clothes were far too large for him. Gabby had to order rodent and guinea pig-sized outfits just to find something that would actually fit his tiny body.

When he wasn’t showing off his tiny wardrobe, Winslow was a massive cuddler. Since he was too small to jump on the bed, Gabby spent hours on the floor with him, letting him snuggle right into the crook of her neck.

Pushing Through Anticipatory Grief

Loving a dog with Mucopolysaccharidosis type VI comes with a heavy emotional toll. Gabby admitted there is a lot of anticipatory grief, knowing there is no cure and only supportive care available.

However, her previous experience with the disorder gave her the strength to push through the sadness. She made a conscious choice to celebrate every single day she had with him.

They focused on the joy of the present moment. Together, they went on adventures, took special trips, and built a lifetime of memories in a short amount of time.

A Beautiful, Bittersweet Legacy

Winslow didn’t just receive care; he gave back immense emotional support. Gabby shared that her tiny, ferocious companion helped her navigate some of the absolute hardest times of her life.

He was a little over three years old when his health finally declined, bringing his time with Gabby to an end. In a heartbreaking twist of fate, this happened exactly a year to the day after Gabby lost her son.

Though his time on earth was short, Winslow lived a life filled with profound love and comfort. He transformed his final days into a beautiful legacy that Gabby will carry in her heart forever.
