Fearful Ohio Dog Stayed Huddled In Her Cage, Flinching Whenever Someone Tried To Get Close
After being saved from an animal abuse case, Mable was too terrified to even leave her crate. With months of patience, her foster mom helped her discover that human hands are meant for love, leading to a beautiful transformation.
A Heartbreaking Past

When a dog has experienced the worst of humanity, learning to trust again doesn’t happen overnight.
For one rescue dog named Mable in Ohio, the trauma of her past was written all over her face.
She had recently come from a deeply troubling situation, and her spirit was completely shattered.
Her rescuer knew immediately that this sweet, fearful girl was going to need a lot of help.
When I first saw her, you could see it in her eyes, her new foster mom recalled.
Bringing Mable Home

Despite the clear challenges ahead, her rescuer didn’t hesitate to step up.
She knew Mable needed a quiet, safe place to decompress away from the loud and stressful shelter environment.
“It was a no-brainer that I brought her home,” she explained.
However, she soon realized the true extent of Mable’s deep-seated trauma.
“She was much more of a project than I ever would have anticipated.”
Paralyzed By Fear

Once they arrived home, Mable’s survival instincts took over completely.
The safety of a warm house was a foreign concept to the traumatized dog.
She retreated to the back of her cage, terrified of any movement, sound, or attempt at connection.
“I couldn’t even get near the cage without her trying to flee away from me,” her mom shared.
It was clear that Mable expected the worst from people.
Gentle Encouragement

Taking things one tiny step at a time, her mom tried to coax Mable out for necessary bathroom breaks.
“When I first was able to get Mable out of the kennel, I had to do so by gently encouraging her with the leash,” she noted.
Every movement Mable made outside of her safe space was filled with intense anxiety.
“The whole time, she was on high alert, her tail was tucked, her ears were back.”
She was physically out of her crate, but emotionally, she was still trapped in her past.
A Promise Of Safety

Seeing how broken the poor dog was only strengthened her rescuer’s resolve.
She refused to give up on the fearful pup, no matter how long it took.
“At that point, I was so committed to this journey,” she said.
She knew she had to rewrite everything Mable thought she knew about humans.
“I did think it was really important to show her that the human touch was not going to hurt her.”
The First Signs Of Play

Healing took time, patience, and absolute consistency.
For months, Mable’s mom worked tirelessly to prove that her home was a safe haven.
Then, after a long period of waiting, a massive breakthrough finally happened.
“The first big milestone between Mable and me was when she tried to initiate play with me,” her mom said with joy.
“She had never done anything like that before.”
Learning To Accept Love

That playful moment opened the door to physical affection.
Mable was finally ready to see what it felt like to be loved and comforted.
“The first time that I was able to pet Mable, I sat down on the floor next to her, gently stroking her,” her mom remembered.
As she softly praised her with a sweet “Good girl,” Mable soaked in the gentle touch.
The fear in her eyes was finally starting to melt away.
Walking With Confidence

The milestones kept coming as Mable shed the heavy weight of her past.
After months of fearful outings, they finally experienced their first “untucked-tail walk.”
Mable was finally exploring the world with confidence, curiosity, and a wagging tail.
“I think my favorite part of this experience is watching who Mable is now compared to the dog she was at the shelter,” her mom shared.
“I see less and less of that dog at the shelter every day.”
