A Massive Rescue Commitment
When a helpless litter of puppies is found abandoned, it takes a special kind of heart to step up and provide them with a safe haven.
For one dedicated animal lover named Jean, taking in a massive litter of nine meant putting her own life on hold.
She never expected that the tiniest pup of the bunch would soon face a frightening medical emergency.
Jean was originally planning to go out of town to visit her sister-in-law when Hope Animal Rescue in Durham, North Carolina, reached out.
The rescue asked if she could take in a litter of nine puppies that had been found in someone’s front yard.
Creating The Perfect Puppy Haven
Initially, Jean didn’t think she could manage it, especially since she still had a puppy from a previous litter.
Finding a temporary foster for nine puppies while she traveled seemed impossible.
However, her heart won out, and she decided she would rather save these nine puppies than take her trip.
She canceled her vacation and brought the entire litter home.
To accommodate them, Jean and her husband utilized a special outbuilding on their property.
An Alarming Discovery
Her husband had run electricity to the building, ensuring the puppies had heating and air conditioning.
They set up a playpen inside, complete with a dog door that allowed the growing pups access to an exterior area.
Everything was going smoothly until a couple of days ago, when Jean’s husband went to check on the litter.
He noticed that one of the puppies looked remarkably different from the rest.
It was Clouds, the four-pound runt of the litter, and she was looking incredibly sad and swollen.
Rushing To The Vet
Clouds had been stung by a bee, and her tiny body was having a severe reaction.
Because she was the runt and weighed so little, the venom was a lot for her small system to handle.
“I see that you’re a little sad, baby,” Jean told the swollen pup as she prepared to leave.
She immediately scooped Clouds up and rushed her straight to the veterinary clinic.
“I know, we’re taking you to the vet, baby,” she comforted her on the drive over.
More Surprises Back Home
The veterinary staff treated the tiny puppy immediately upon arrival.
They informed Jean that Clouds needed to stay at the clinic for the entire day for close observation.
Leaving the little runt in their capable hands, Jean headed back home to check on the rest of the litter.
When she arrived, she made another startling discovery in the puppy pen.
Two of the other puppies also looked like they had been bitten or stung by something.
A Stubborn Swelling
Her husband simply hadn’t noticed the milder swelling on the other two dogs.
Jean quickly loaded them up and rushed right back to the vet’s office.
Fortunately, their reactions weren’t nearly as severe as Clouds’s had been.
The two siblings just needed a quick shot of Benadryl before they were cleared to go home.
Clouds, however, was still struggling with her painful reaction.
A Quiet Night Indoors
When Jean returned to pick Clouds up after her day of observation, she was concerned.
In Jean’s opinion, the puppy’s swelling hadn’t gone down at all.
The vet admitted they expected her to look a lot better, but said she was safe to go home.
Jean was given instructions to continue administering Benadryl if the swelling persisted.
To keep a close eye on her, Jean brought Clouds inside the main house for the night.
Waiting For A Forever Family
She checked on the tiny pup constantly, giving her another dose of Benadryl later that evening.
Finally, the stubborn swelling started to subside, bringing immense relief to her worried foster mom.
By the next morning, Clouds was acting like a completely normal, playful puppy again.
Now fully recovered, the sweet girl is simply waiting for her second chance at life.
Jean is hoping the perfect family will apply for Clouds soon, as the brave little survivor hasn’t received any adoption applications yet.
