California Shelter Dog Was Shaking In Fear Until A Simple Weekly Outing Opened A New Door

Olive was facing imminent euthanasia at the shelter. Thanks to a dedicated California rescue and a very special weekly outing, this sweet deaf dog found the perfect forever home.

A Heartbreaking Sight

The shelter environment is overwhelming for any dog, but for one particular dog, it was absolutely terrifying. She sat in her kennel, trembling with fear.

To make matters worse, she was completely deaf. The loud, chaotic shelter was a confusing and isolating place for a dog who couldn’t hear what was happening around her.

When Emma, an animal rescuer, first saw her, the sight brought her to tears. “It made me cry seeing her in the kennel, just shaking,” Emma recalled.

Signs of a Hard Past

The dog, later named Olive, clearly had a difficult past. She was brought into the shelter while still lactating from recently having puppies.

Emma suspected that Olive had been dumped by her previous owners. The physical signs suggested this wasn’t her first time having a litter, either.

“It looks like she had had litters of puppies, not just one,” Emma explained. Between her physical condition and her deafness, Olive had truly been through a lot.

Racing Against Time

Olive’s situation was incredibly urgent. Because of overcrowding and her fragile state, she was on the euthanasia list.

“She could have been euthanized at any moment,” Emma said. Knowing they had to act fast, Emma stepped in through Sandy Dog Rescue, an organization she started about a year prior.

Emma quickly secured a temporary foster home to get Olive out of the shelter immediately. The quick action saved Olive’s life just in time.

A Gentle and Loving Spirit

Once Olive was safe, her true personality began to shine through. Despite everything she had endured, she held no grudges.

She proved to be an incredibly happy and friendly dog. She loved to play, but she was equally content to just cuddle on the couch and watch Netflix all day.

“You can just trust her that no matter what situation she’s in, there’s no ounce of aggression in her, not one bit,” Emma noted.

Moving to a Long-Term Haven

Olive stayed at her temporary foster home for about five to seven days while she decompressed. Then, it was time for her next step.

She moved into a long-term foster home that already had a tiny dog and a big dog. Olive fit right in and absolutely loved her new furry foster siblings.

Her foster family quickly realized how special she was. They wanted to make sure she had the best possible experience while waiting for her forever home.

A Generous Gift

Olive’s long-term fosters were incredibly generous with her care. They decided to include her in a special activity they did for their own dogs.

They paid for Olive to go on weekly dog hikes with a professional dog hiker. It was a wonderful opportunity for the deaf dog to explore nature safely.

These hikes allowed Olive to socialize, exercise, and build confidence in the great outdoors.

The Perfect Match

During these weekly excursions, something beautiful happened. The dog hiker began to form a deep bond with the sweet, gentle rescue dog.

He saw firsthand how friendly and well-behaved Olive was with the rest of the pack. He quickly fell in love with her.

Eventually, the dog hiker decided he couldn’t part with her. He officially adopted Olive, making her a permanent part of his family.

A Dog’s Dream Come True

Today, Olive’s life looks completely different from the terrifying days she spent shaking in a shelter kennel.

She gets to go to work with her dad every single day. Her days are now filled with hiking adventures alongside a pack of canine friends.

For a dog who was once abandoned and out of time, she found the ultimate happily ever after. “It’s literally like a dog’s dream,” Emma smiled. “It’s so perfect.”
