A Heartbreaking Surrender

When a senior dog named Rudy arrived at the local Humane Society, his future looked incredibly bleak. He was surrendered with the explicit instruction to be euthanized because his back legs simply didn’t work.

His previous owners provided no additional information about his past. They only noted that he had suffered some kind of unknown spinal injury that left him unable to walk.

With his mobility gone and added complications from incontinence, his quality of life was heavily in question. It was a devastating situation for an older dog who just needed a comfortable place to rest.

The Quiet Boy In The Kennel

Fortunately, the Humane Society saw potential in the sweet senior dog. They began treating him with acupuncture and medication to help strengthen his fragile legs.

As his personality emerged, his new family fell in love with his adorable quirks. They affectionately named his soft, expressive ears his “little Dorito ears” because of their distinct shape.

Though he loves his mom dearly, Rudy actually chose a different favorite person in the house. His absolute favorite human is his mom’s twin sister.

“If you can believe it, he’s more snugly with her,” his mom laughed. Whenever she is around, Rudy is right by her side, demanding gentle cuddles.

Healing And Growing Stronger

About eight months after bringing him home, his family took him to a specialist two hours away to investigate his back injury. The visit brought incredibly relieving news.

The specialist confirmed the spinal injury but assured the family that it wasn’t causing Rudy any pain. They continued to monitor him closely while keeping up with his acupuncture treatments.

Over time, his legs grew stronger, and he was eventually able to wean off the acupuncture entirely. Today, a stranger would never guess the severe medical trauma he had been through.

A Thriving Senior

Now approaching his 15th birthday in March, Rudy is a happy, healthy, and incredibly handsome boy. His mobility has improved drastically since his shelter days.

His walk has actually gotten faster over time, and the determined senior can now navigate upstairs and climb up curbs on his own. He refuses to let his past hold him back.
