Arthur was a dog who had the odds stacked against him in almost every way. He was completely deaf, missing all of his teeth, and well into his senior years.

After spending a year waiting for a family to choose him, the tiny dog hadn’t received a single adoption application.

His extensive medical needs and fragile condition made him a tough sell for most adopters. But one woman saw past all his challenges and knew he deserved a loving home.

Before finding his way to safety, Arthur had been wandering the busy streets of Tijuana, Mexico.

It is hard to imagine how a dog so small and vulnerable survived on his own. His legs are literally only two inches long, making him incredibly fragile.

Thankfully, the At-Choo Foundation in Tijuana stepped in to help. They knew they had to get the senior dog off the streets immediately to provide him with much-needed medical care.

A Year Without Hope

Eventually, Arthur was transferred to Dachshunds and Friends Rescue, where he hoped to find his forever family.

However, the wait turned out to be much longer than anyone anticipated. He spent about a year with the rescue without any interest from adopters.

His special needs and advanced age likely deterred people from bringing him home. It seemed like the sweet senior might never find a family of his own.

An Instant Connection

That all changed when a woman named Heather learned about Arthur’s situation.

She was instantly drawn to the tiny, toothless dog and knew she had to help him. Without hesitation, Heather decided to bring Arthur home.

She could tell just by looking at him that he had been through a lot. He desperately needed good nutrition and the kind of undivided attention he had probably never experienced.

Slowly Learning To Trust

When Arthur first arrived at Heather’s house, it took him some time to adjust to his new surroundings.

Everything was unfamiliar, and his inability to hear made the transition even more challenging.

But Heather was patient, giving him the space and care he needed to feel secure. As he settled in, the walls he had built up slowly began to come down.

A Quirky Personality Emerges

Once Arthur finally felt safe, his true personality started to shine through.

He developed some adorable quirks, like rolling over on his back just to look up at Heather.

He also proved to have very specific preferences when it came to affection. While he loves to cuddle, he is strictly a nighttime cuddler and prefers his independence during the day.

A Unique Way To Communicate

Because Arthur is completely deaf, Heather had to find creative ways to communicate with him.

They rely entirely on touch and visual cues. Over the years, Heather has taught him different signals by gently tapping his body in specific places.

When he is in a deep sleep, she is careful not to startle him. If he doesn’t smell her right away, she gently touches his shoulder and softly pets him until he realizes she is there.

The Perfect Little Guide

Arthur wasn’t the only special needs dog in Heather’s home. He shares the house with Ace, a dog who is completely blind.

The two senior dogs quickly formed a heartwarming bond, acting like two little old men wandering around together.

Ace often follows Arthur, and Arthur patiently lets his blind brother bump into him on a consistent basis. Without any training, the deaf dog naturally became a gentle guide for his blind sibling.

A Safe Space At Her Feet

While Arthur’s exact age is a mystery, veterinarians estimate he is somewhere between 15 and 18 years old.

Despite his advanced age, the bond he shares with Heather is incredibly strong and special.

Whenever Arthur feels uncomfortable or lacks confidence, he seeks out his ultimate safe space: leaning directly on Heather’s ankles and feet.

The Life He Always Deserved

That simple gesture is Arthur’s way of asking for help, and Heather is always ready to step in and comfort him.

It breaks her heart to think about how long such a fragile boy survived on the streets before being rescued.

But today, Arthur is living his best life. He is the sweetest boy, and though Heather wishes she could have found him sooner, she is making sure his final years are filled with all the love he deserves.
