Texas Senior Dog Was Passed Over Until She Had Just Two Weeks Left At The Shelter
Nobody wanted her. With a list of medical conditions and advanced age, the little dog was rapidly running out of time. She had just two weeks left before she was scheduled to be euthanized at the Texas shelter.
A Bleak Diagnosis

Nobody wanted the little senior dog named Shelly.
When she arrived at the shelter, her medical evaluation revealed a host of severe issues. She was suffering from COPD, chronic bronchitis, and a collapsing trachea.
Because of her advanced age and extensive medical needs, she was immediately placed on the euthanasia list. The shelter environment is incredibly tough on senior dogs with chronic health conditions.
With the clock ticking, Shelly had only two weeks left to find a miracle.
Passed Over Again

Just in time, a rescue organization stepped in to save her life. Shelly was pulled by a sanctuary that specifically specializes in senior and unwanted dogs.
It was a safe haven, but it wasn’t a permanent home. Livia, a dedicated volunteer at the sanctuary, watched as time went by.
Even at a rescue designed for dogs just like her, Shelly struggled to find an adopter. She waited there for about two to three months.
Despite being safe from euthanasia, it seemed like nobody wanted to take a chance on the ailing senior dog.
A Temporary Solution

Seeing Shelly constantly passed over, Livia decided to step up. She offered to take the senior dog into her home as a foster.
The plan was simply to give Shelly a comfortable place to rest while she waited for a forever family.
However, the universe had a different plan in mind for both of them. It didn’t take long for Livia to realize that she was already deeply attached.
“I realized I could not let her go,” Livia shared. The temporary foster arrangement quickly turned into a permanent adoption.
Uncovering Her True Spirit

As Shelly settled into her new home and her health stabilized, a beautiful transformation took place. Once she started feeling better, her full personality finally emerged.
She proved to be an incredibly affectionate and joyful companion. When she is truly happy, Shelly loves rolling on her back and nudging up against Livia.
She is always eager to give kisses and be close to her new mom. She even insists on being involved in Livia’s daily routines.
“When I’m eating lunch, she wants me to hold her so she can watch me eat lunch,” Livia laughed. Shelly also has a unique way of communicating, starting with soft, small barks that slowly ramp up in volume.
The Mystery Of Her Splayed Feet

Beyond her charming personality, Shelly has a very distinct physical trait. She has two big, flat, splayed feet.
Livia isn’t entirely sure what caused her paws to develop this way. She suspects that Shelly might have grown up standing on the wire bottom of a crate.
Another possibility is that the little dog is simply double-jointed. Whatever the cause, it makes her incredibly unique.
“They’re unlike any other feet I’ve ever seen in rescue,” Livia noted. Rather than a flaw, it is just one more thing that makes Shelly special.
A Pampered Golden Age

Today, Shelly is 15 years old and living a life of absolute luxury. Livia treats her with the utmost care and devotion.
“I just hold her like a little baby and she just loves it,” Livia said. Shelly’s diet is also top-tier, as Livia home-cooks all of her meals.
Sometimes, Shelly will decide she doesn’t want to eat what’s in front of her. This usually means she is holding out for a fresh, warm batch of food.
She will sit comfortably in her bed, her tongue hanging out, staring at Livia until her fresh-cooked meal is served.
Beating The Odds

Despite the grim prognosis she was given at the shelter, Shelly is thriving. Her health is now described as amazing.
She remains under strict veterinary care to manage her chronic conditions. Livia ensures they are at the vet regularly for blood work and checkups.
The dedication has paid off immensely. Shelly is eating well, running around, and playing like a much younger dog.
Most importantly, her breathing has significantly improved, giving her a wonderful quality of life in her senior years.
Saving Each Other

While Livia saved Shelly’s life, the rescue was entirely mutual. Shelly came into Livia’s life during an incredibly difficult chapter.
Livia had recently lost her first senior dog and was feeling completely broken and alone. The grief was overwhelming until Shelly arrived.
The quirky little dog with the splayed feet managed to put a smile on Livia’s face every single day. She brought laughter back into a quiet home.
“She got me through that time and because of that, my bond with her is unlike any other,” Livia shared. Today, she considers it a profound honor to be Shelly’s caretaker and everything in her golden years.
