Tiny Foster Florida Puppy Wouldn’t Give Up On A Skittish Stray Who Had Never Wanted A Dog Friend Before

Mylo was a skittish former stray in Florida who wanted nothing to do with other dogs. But when a tiny foster pup named Gabi entered his home after a hurricane, her unwavering affection—and a sudden surgery—sparked a beautiful, unbreakable bond.

A Nervous Beginning

When you adopt a former stray in Florida, building trust can take a lot of time and patience. For one family, helping their rescue dog feel safe was a slow, steady journey.

Mylo, a big 60-pound lab mix, had lived a rough life on the streets. Because of his past as a stray, he was extremely skittish and very nervous.

He didn’t even like human touch. His new owner had to use a lot of positive reinforcement just to show him that he was finally safe.

Trying to Make Friends

Once Mylo started to settle in, his owner wanted to help him come out of his shell even more. The next step was introducing him to other animals.

His owner began socializing Mylo with as many dogs as possible, hoping he would find a playmate.

Unfortunately, Mylo just wasn’t interested. He remained completely indifferent to the other dogs he met.

A Storm Brings a New Face

Everything changed when Hurricane Ian struck Florida last year. The devastating storm left local animal shelters overwhelmed and desperate for help.

Shelters were urgently asking for people to step up and foster dogs to clear space. Mylo’s owner answered the call.

The very next day, they picked up Gabi. She was a little 20-pound bully breed mix with a whole lot of personality.

An Unrequited Obsession

From the very first moment they met, Gabi was absolutely captivated by her new big brother. She was instantly and completely obsessed with Mylo.

The tiny pup wanted to do nothing but play with him. She would playfully bite at his tail and nibble on his paws.

Whatever the family was doing with Mylo, Gabi was right there, watching and observing his every move.

Still Keeping His Distance

Despite Gabi’s best efforts, Mylo wasn’t quite ready to embrace his new shadow. He was still a little iffy about the energetic puppy.

Even when Gabi would boldly try to grab his toys right in front of him, Mylo didn’t react.

Just as he had been with the other dogs he met, the big lab mix remained entirely indifferent to her antics.

A Sudden Medical Need

Gabi’s relentless attempts to win Mylo over were briefly put on hold due to a medical issue. The little pup was suffering from a condition known as cherry eye.

To fix the uncomfortable issue, Gabi needed to undergo surgery. It was a stressful day for the tiny foster dog.

For moral support, the family decided to bring Mylo along with them on the day of the surgery.

The Turning Point

When Gabi returned from her procedure, she was groggy and seeking comfort. Mylo was quietly sitting on his mat.

The little pup walked right up to the big dog and snuggled herself deeply into his chest area.

To his owner’s surprise, Mylo didn’t pull away. They began licking each other in the face, and they stayed cuddled up like that for hours.

Watching the two dogs comfort each other after the surgery was a beautiful sight. It was the breakthrough Mylo so desperately needed.

Seeing the profound bond they had just formed, their owner made a life-changing decision.

“That’s when I said, ‘I can’t separate these two anymore,'” the owner recalled. Gabi had officially found her forever home.

An Unlikely Play Style

Today, their relationship has blossomed into something incredibly unique. In fact, it can look a little scary to outsiders at first glance.

The first thing their owner often sees in the morning is Gabi’s tiny head completely inside of Mylo’s mouth during their roughhousing.

Despite the massive size difference between the 60-pound lab mix and the 20-pound bully mix, they both thoroughly enjoy their wild play sessions.

Learning to Love the World

The duo is now completely inseparable. They go paddleboarding together, they go running together, and they simply do everything by each other’s side.

The family believes that Gabi’s “soul medicine” is being with her dog siblings. But she gave Mylo an incredible gift in return.

Gabi taught the once-skittish stray self-confidence and showed him that it’s okay to love the world. Today, the two rescues are truly best friends.
