When Leonie and her husband stopped by the local animal shelter, they had no intention of adopting. Then they met Belle, a quirky puppy with human-like eyes and a personality too big to ignore.
A Birthday Trip To The Shelter
Leonie and her husband were simply planning a casual outing in Georgia for his birthday.
He had grown up with dogs and always loved being around them.
They decided to visit the local Humane Society with a strict plan in mind.
They were just going to look, with no intention of bringing an animal home that day.
The Puppy Who Instantly Chose Them
But animal shelters have a funny way of changing people’s plans.
As they walked through the rows of kennels, one particular puppy caught their eye.
She was about 12 weeks old, and the shelter had absolutely no background information on her.
Yet, the little dog didn’t need a history to make an impression. She pressed her face right up against the kennel door, desperate to greet them.
A Wonderfully Unique Appearance
In that moment, Leonie and her husband knew they were taking the puppy, whom they named Belle, home.
It wasn’t just her affectionate nature that stood out, but her incredibly unique face.
Leonie jokes that if a child tried to draw a dog, they would probably draw Belle.
She has a goofy smile, and one of her ears always likes to stick straight up.
The Medical Mystery Behind Her Look
People often comment on Belle’s appearance, noting that she has incredibly human-like eyes.
Curious about her distinct facial structure, her new family asked their veterinarian for insight.
The vet explained that Belle was likely stuck in the birth canal, which caused her features to be stretched back.
Thankfully, the condition is purely cosmetic. They ran a vision test, and everything came back perfectly normal.
Uncovering Her Surprising Breed
Leonie’s husband often joked that Belle would never be a traditional show dog, and Leonie happily agreed.
Still, they were curious about her genetic makeup and decided to have a Wisdom Panel DNA test done.
The results showed that Belle is 50% Doberman Pinscher.
The other half of her DNA is a mix of cattle dog and hound, making her a true one-of-a-kind rescue.
The Self-Taught Genius
Belle’s unique mix of breeds gave her an incredible level of intelligence.
Without any training from her family, she figured out a brilliant way to communicate her needs.
Whenever she wants to go outside, she simply walks over to the spring doorstop and rings it.
She even uses this clever trick in the middle of the night to wake Leonie up for a bathroom break.
A Howling Conversationalist
Her communication skills don’t stop at the door.
Belle is a very vocal dog who loves to have full conversations with Leonie.
Because the family lives close to a fire station, Belle has developed a special response to the loud noises.
Whenever a fire truck goes by, she answers the siren with a beautiful, howling siren sound of her own.
A Loving Bond And A New Challenge
Over the years, the family has grown to include two young children, ages three and two.
The kids absolutely adore Belle, but they are also very generous with sharing their food.
Because of this extra snacking, Belle is currently on a weight loss journey to drop about seven pounds.
She is making great progress, and through it all, she remains deeply devoted to Leonie, constantly checking in to prove she is the best girl they could have ever asked for.
