Michigan Dog Is Found Wandering At 17, Then His Owner Tells The Shelter Not To Bring Him Home
He was 17 years old, severely underweight, and abandoned by the only family he knew. But a compassionate shelter volunteer refused to let his story end in a kennel.
A Senior Dog Wandering Alone
The small, frail dog was found wandering down a lonely road, entirely on his own.
Thankfully, a young couple spotted him and knew they couldn’t just leave him there to fend for himself.
They gently picked him up and transported him to the local animal shelter, hoping he would find safety.
It was there that Serena, a dedicated shelter volunteer, first laid eyes on the senior pup who would soon change her life.
A Heartbreaking Condition
It was immediately clear that the dog, estimated to be about 17 years old, had been severely neglected.
His teeth were completely rotten, and the decay was so severe that his lower jaw had already disintegrated.
His nails were overgrown, and his frail body was incredibly skinny.
Serena suspected he hadn’t been fed properly in a long time, and believed he had likely run away from his previous situation just to survive.
The Call No One Expected
Despite his terrible condition, the shelter staff managed to track down his original owner.
They placed a call, hoping to find a worried family looking for their lost companion.
Instead, the owner’s response was shockingly cold: "Oh, he’s really old. He goes to the bathroom in the house, so just euthanize him."
The owner had no intention of coming to get him, leaving the 17-year-old dog completely abandoned.
A Defiant Rescue
Hearing the owner’s callous request, Serena knew she had to step in.
"I was like, ‘No, definitely not doing that,’" she recalled.
Refusing to let the sweet senior’s life end in a cold shelter, she decided to take him home herself.
She assumed she would just be a hospice foster, offering him a warm bed for whatever short time he had left.
Earning A Unique Name
At the shelter, the staff had affectionately dubbed him "Stinky Pete."
The nickname came from the terrible smell radiating from his mouth due to his severely rotten teeth.
When Serena brought him home, her husband started calling him "Stank" for short.
The quirky name perfectly matched his unique personality, and it quickly stuck.
A Surprising Troublemaker
Despite his advanced age and frail body, Stank proved he still had plenty of spirit.
When he first arrived at Serena’s property, he turned out to be quite the little troublemaker.
He discovered the family’s free-range chickens and decided it was his job to chase them everywhere.
"He was crazy. I’d be chasing him through the woods," Serena laughed, amazed by his sudden burst of energy.
The House Training Myth
Stank eventually settled down, integrating perfectly into the family’s pack of dogs.
After a few weeks, he stopped chasing the chickens entirely and learned to live peacefully alongside them.
He also proved his former owner completely wrong about his behavior indoors.
Aside from one single accident when he first arrived, the 17-year-old dog has been perfectly house-trained.
A Risky But Necessary Surgery
To truly give Stank a good quality of life, Serena knew they had to address his painful mouth.
Putting a 17-year-old dog under anesthesia was a massive risk, but without the surgery, he wouldn’t survive.
They spent a couple of weeks helping him gain weight and gave him antibiotics to prepare his body.
Thankfully, the veterinarian was able to successfully remove all of his rotten teeth, and Stank pulled through beautifully.
Defying Every Expectation
Without the pain and infection in his mouth, Stank began to truly blossom.
His mobility is fantastic, and incredibly for his age, he can still hear and see perfectly well.
Whenever Serena holds him, he simply melts into her arms, looking completely content and safe.
He has proven to be incredibly resilient, leaving his difficult past far behind him.
The Happiest Extra Chapter
Serena initially thought Stank might only survive a couple of months due to how skinny and old he was.
But that was last March, and a year and a half later, the senior dog is still thriving.
He transformed from a neglected, unwanted dog into a cherished member of a loving family.
"He is just the happiest dog I’ve ever had, probably," Serena smiled, grateful for every extra day with him.
