Large Dog Sat In A Florida Shelter Kennel As Time Ran Out, Then Two Strangers Did Something Extraordinary
A Florida couple took a massive leap of faith, driving 16 hours to save a large, injured shelter dog. In return, the gentle giant helped mend their grieving hearts.
A High-Risk Situation
When John and Channing first saw a photo of a large shelter dog online, they knew he was in serious trouble. Because of his breed, his size, and his rough physical condition, the dog was considered high-risk at the facility.
Time was running out for the sweet pup.
Refusing to let his story end in a kennel, the couple made a bold decision. They packed up and embarked on a grueling 16-hour round trip just to get him out.
Nerves and Excitement
The initial meet-and-greet with the dog, whom they named Oso, was an emotional whirlwind. While John was 100 percent excited to meet their new family member, Channing admitted to feeling very nervous.
They had never met Oso before committing to the rescue.
Channing just wanted to make sure that the large dog would gel well with their family. Her biggest hope was simply being able to give him the best life possible after whatever he had been through.
An Absolute Angel
Any fears the couple had quickly melted away during Oso’s first few days at home. He proved to be an absolute angel right from the start.
They quickly realized how lucky they were.
Oso was always incredibly sweet and gentle. The couple noted that even if he found himself in an uncomfortable situation, his instinct was to run away rather than lash out.
Uncovering A Painful Past
While they didn’t know much about Oso’s backstory, his body told a tragic tale of neglect. He suffered from severe skin allergies and had significant issues with his eyelids.
His eye condition was so severe that it required a double surgery to correct.
In addition to his medical ailments, the couple noticed that Oso’s ears had been cropped very poorly, a permanent reminder of his difficult past.
Scars of Survival
The physical trauma didn’t end with his ears and eyes. Oso was missing quite a bit of hair on his back and his leg.
When John and Channing consulted their veterinarian about the bald patches, the assessment was heartbreaking. The vet suspected that somebody had burned the dog with something.
Despite the cruelty he had likely faced, Oso held no grudges against humanity.
The Road to Healing
With proper medical care, a safe environment, and endless love, Oso’s body slowly began to heal. The transformation was remarkable.
While some of the fur on his leg still hasn’t grown back, about 95 percent of his coat has returned, leaving only a few little patches behind.
As his body healed, his true, joyful personality finally began to shine through.
A Giant Lap Dog
Today, Oso is a giant dog who firmly believes he is a 10-pound lap dog. He has a massive personality and a commanding presence that people immediately notice when he walks into a room.
He absolutely loves to snuggle with his rescuers.
If they aren’t paying attention, Oso will happily try to hop right onto their laps and fall fast asleep.
Sent From The Other Side
Oso didn’t just find a home; he helped mend a broken family. John and Channing had previously lost their “soul dog,” Bandit, which left a huge hole in their lives.
Opening their hearts again was incredibly hard, but Oso’s presence brought the light back. When John comes home, Oso is hyper and ready to play, but when Channing arrives, he turns into a gentle cuddler.
They believe Bandit helped select Oso from the other side. Watching the big dog blossom and finally feel safe has been a beautiful journey, proving that love can heal even the deepest wounds.
