Matted Florida Dog Struggled To Cross A Busy Intersection As Her Heavy Coat Weighed Her Down

A Cry For Help

When a stray dog in Florida was spotted wandering in the middle of a busy intersection, her situation looked incredibly grim.

She was struggling to move, weighed down by a massive, tangled coat that made every step a challenge.

But this brave pup knew exactly what to do when help finally arrived on the scene.

As soon as a police vehicle pulled up to the intersection, she helped herself right up into the car, ready to be saved.

The Worst They Had Ever Seen

Rescuers named the sweet dog Sprout, but they were heartbroken by her physical condition.

Her rescuers noted that her condition was, by far, the worst case of matting that they had ever seen.

The heavy, tight mats pulled at her skin, and she just looked so incredibly uncomfortable.

The poor dog was struggling so much that she was only walking inches at a time.

Promises Of A Better Life

Despite her pain, Sprout remained gentle with the people who were trying to help her.

Her rescuers just kept trying to reassure her that things were going to get better from here.

The matting was so severe that her face, right on her snout, was really the only place that wasn’t covered in thick, painful tangles.

She desperately needed a massive grooming session, but she was too fragile to undergo it while awake.

A Delicate Procedure

Thankfully, the veterinary team was able to sedate Sprout for her groom to make it as comfortable as possible for her.

The grooming process was incredibly tedious and ended up taking several hours to complete.

The team had to be very, very careful to not cut any part of her body as they worked through the dense armor of fur.

They had to go very slowly, carefully removing the layers of matted fur to help her feel comfortable again.

A Staggering Discovery

When the grooming was finally finished, the team was left in absolute shock by what they had removed.

In total, they shaved off more than 30 pounds of matted fur from Sprout’s small body.

The pile of fur was so massive that one rescuer remarked it was “like a whole cat.”

With the incredibly heavy burden finally gone, Sprout was ready to start her new life.

Learning To Be A Dog

Thankfully, the rescue had a foster family ready to take her in right away.

Adjusting to a normal home environment was a little dicey at first for the sheltered pup.

Sprout had clearly never lived in a two-story home, because she didn’t even know how to do stairs.

But with gentle encouragement from her foster family, she slowly started to figure out how to navigate her new world.

The Zoomies Begin

As the days passed in her warm and loving foster home, Sprout’s true personality finally started to emerge.

Each day, she started to warm up more and become increasingly playful.

Without 30 pounds of fur holding her back, she discovered the joy of running freely.

To her foster family’s delight, she even started to have the zoomies around the house.

A Quirky New Habit

Along with her newfound energy, Sprout developed a hilarious and adorable new habit.

She started to steal socks from around the house whenever she could find them.

Her new favorite thing was to take a stolen sock and cuddle with it on the couch.

Her foster family couldn’t help but laugh at their sweet little sock thief.

Finding Her Forever

The rescue shared Sprout’s incredible transformation story online, and a lot of people fell in love with her.

The sweet pup received a lot of adoption applications from families eager to give her a forever home.

A few weeks later, the rescue announced the news everyone had been waiting for: Sprout got adopted!

Looking back to day one, her rescuers admitted they wouldn’t have thought she would be in this wonderful spot today.

Now, Sprout spends her days safe, loved, and happily cuddling with all the socks she can find.
