Fostering a shelter dog is a calling that requires endless patience and an open heart. For one New York man, the goal is always to find the dog who needs help the most.

Whenever he signs up to foster, he makes a specific request. He asks for the dog who has been at the shelter the longest, or the one who is suffering the most.

That is exactly how he found Banjo. The sweet, unique-looking dog—affectionately described as “part gator, part pig”—was waiting for someone to finally give him a chance.

Preparing for his 40th foster dog, the dedicated rescuer made sure his small New York apartment was perfectly set up. He wanted Banjo to know immediately that the space belonged to him, too.

He set out fresh bowls and made sure a cozy bed was ready for some much-needed pittie cuddles.

A Nervous But Sweet Arrival

When the moment finally came to pick up Banjo, the dog’s overwhelmed nerves were instantly apparent. The stress of his past had clearly taken a toll.

The moment Banjo walked out of the door, he peed nonstop. For his new foster dad, this nervous reaction was just confirmation that he had chosen the right dog to help.

Despite his intense anxiety, Banjo showed an immediate desire for comfort. He just wanted to feel safe.

“Banjo was just ready to be held, to be touched, to just rest his head, finally,” his foster dad recalled.

It was the beginning of a beautiful, healing bond.

Once they arrived at the apartment, it was time to settle into a comforting routine. The foster dad had a special “bully ritual” for every dog that entered his home.

To help wash away the shelter smell and soothe his skin, Banjo was treated to a luxurious coconut oil shampoo bath.

The gentle scrubbing helped Banjo relax and realize he was in safe hands. His comfort level with his new foster dad grew almost immediately.

After the bath, they snuggled up for some relaxing entertainment. Their movie of choice was “101 Dalmatians.”

These quiet moments helped build the foundation of trust Banjo desperately needed.

Paralyzed By The Stairs

While Banjo felt safe indoors, the outside world was still incredibly daunting. He carried a lot of lingering anxiety from his past.

Going on simple walks was a massive struggle at first. The bustling city environment was overwhelming for the timid pup.

One of his biggest hurdles was the staircase. Banjo was absolutely terrified of the stairs, freezing up whenever he had to face them.

His foster dad knew he couldn’t force the issue. Instead, he decided to use patience, gentle encouragement, and a pocket full of treats.

He began telling his “Banji baby” that there were delicious rewards waiting for him at the top.

Conquering The Climb

Helping Banjo overcome his fear required constant reassurance. His foster dad would stop in his tracks wherever they were just to talk him through his panic.

“We’re gonna get some treats upstairs, OK?” he would tell the nervous dog. “Come on, I believe in you.”

Slowly but surely, the gentle coaxing began to work. Banjo took a brave step forward, trusting the man holding his leash.

When Banjo finally made it up the stairs, his foster dad erupted in cheers. “Just seeing that shell break in real time is so emotional,” he shared.

Their beloved “land manatee” had finally conquered the stairs.

The Happy Walk Dance

With the stairs no longer a terrifying obstacle, Banjo’s confidence began to bloom. This newfound bravery led to a magical milestone: their very first successful walk.

Overjoyed by Banjo’s progress, his foster dad did a little “tippy tappy” happy dance on the sidewalk.

To his absolute delight, Banjo looked up and playfully mimicked the dancing motion. The dog was finally experiencing true joy.

From that moment forward, a new tradition was born. Whenever they had a good walk, they would celebrate with their special dance.

“It just brought me so much joy to see him so joyful,” his foster dad explained.

In The Driver’s Seat

As the months passed, the terrified dog who had frozen at the bottom of the stairs completely transformed. Banjo was now walking with a proud, confident stride.

His foster dad noted a beautiful shift in their dynamic. Banjo was no longer relying on him for every ounce of courage.

“He was now in the driver’s seat—I was in the passenger’s seat letting him drive,” he proudly observed.

Watching Banjo thrive was the ultimate reward. It was an absolute blessing to be a passenger on Banjo’s journey to happiness.

But as with all successful foster journeys, this newfound confidence meant Banjo was finally ready for his next chapter.

Fostering is a beautiful but heart-wrenching process. You develop an incredibly deep bond, only to eventually let them go when the perfect family comes along.

When Banjo’s adoption day arrived, his foster dad experienced a flood of emotions. “You kind of feel like you’re always ready for it, but you’re never ready for it when it’s ready for you,” he admitted.

He carefully packed all of Banjo’s belongings, making sure his new family had all the things the “baby gator” loved.

As he prepared to say goodbye, the tears flowed freely. He found himself crying like a baby next to the dog who had changed his life.

It was incredibly hard to say goodbye, but he knew it was exactly what Banjo deserved.

When Banjo met his new forever family, his reaction was pure love. He greeted them with an open heart, showing off the confident, happy dog he had become.

For his foster dad, seeing this “new Banjo” was deeply moving. He always knew that joyful spirit was trapped inside, just waiting to be freed.

Banjo’s new life couldn’t be more perfect. He didn’t just gain a loving human family; he also gained two wonderful fur siblings.

Watching Banjo walk away with his new pack, his foster dad beamed with pride. He knew from the moment they met that this family was the perfect fit.

It was the beautiful, happy forever that they had both prayed for over their dog treats.
