California Dog Had Already Lost Multiple Homes When One Shelter Meeting Took An Unexpected Turn
After being surrendered multiple times and bouncing between families, a low-energy California rescue dog finally found the perfect person to appreciate his gentle, quiet charm.
The Search For A Perfect Match

Mina Tobias had been searching for the perfect canine companion, but the process was taking longer than she expected.
She had already visited a bunch of different shelters, hoping to feel that special spark with a dog in need.
At the time, she was specifically looking to adopt a pit bull.
She had seen many wonderful dogs during her search, but she just hadn’t found the right fit yet.
A Mysterious And Heartbreaking Past

Meanwhile, a dog then known as Bernard was waiting for his own stroke of luck.
His background was mostly a mystery, but the few details the shelter had were heartbreaking.
He had already been surrendered a couple of times, bouncing between different families and going by a couple of different names.
Despite the instability of his past, he was still holding out hope for a family that would finally keep him.
A Fateful Meeting In The Field

The dog had just randomly arrived at the shelter when Mina happened to be visiting.
Even though she had been looking for pit bulls, she decided she should check him out too.
The shelter staff brought him out to a little meeting area in a field so they could get to know each other.
He didn’t hesitate. He ran right up to Mina and snuggled under her knees, instantly stealing her heart.
Leaving Bernard Behind

Knowing he was the one, Mina took him home and decided to give him a fresh start with a brand-new name.
To her, he just didn’t look like a “Bernard.”
She narrowed her choices down to two very different options: Taco and Batman.
Ultimately, she landed on Taco, leaving his turbulent past and old names far behind him.
The King Of Low Effort

As Taco settled into his new home, his hilarious and unique personality began to shine through.
It wasn’t that he didn’t have energy, but he simply chose to be “low effort” when it came to doing tricks.
When asked to give a paw, roll over, or speak for a treat, Taco would do the absolute bare minimum.
A tiny whimper counted as a “speak,” and a half-hearted lean counted as rolling over—and Mina loved him all the more for it.
A Soothing Lullaby

Mina soon discovered a beautiful way to bond with her new companion.
She always sang around the house, and she noticed that whenever Taco was on her lap during her singing, he would start dozing off.
She realized that the sound of her voice made him feel incredibly soothed and safe.
Seeing how much peace it brought him, she made singing to him a regular habit.
The Ultimate Velcro Dog

After losing his home so many times in the past, Taco became deeply attached to his new mom.
He became a true “Velcro dog,” always wanting affection and constantly staring at Mina wherever she went.
He especially loves it when she is sick, because it means she is just laying around the house.
During those days, they can cuddle all day long, which always makes Mina feel better, too.
Growing Older Together

Today, Taco is about 10 years old and happily living out his golden years in a home where he is truly cherished.
He is getting some gray around his face and has developed a beautiful “bandit mask” around his eyes, making him look more like a raccoon every day.
For Mina, taking a chance on the quiet dog in the shelter field was the best decision she ever made.
She calls Taco the greatest gift ever, and she hopes to return the favor in full for the rest of his lifetime.
