Massachusetts Dog Was Abandoned At Four Weeks Old, Then Started Watching Over Puppies Just Like Him
After a heartbreaking start to life, this Massachusetts rescue dog found a beautiful way to give back to puppies who share his tragic story.
A Heartbreaking Discovery

The start of River’s life was completely unimaginable.
When he was just four weeks old, the tiny puppy and his sister were found abandoned on the side of a road, zipped up inside a bag.
They were completely defenseless, separated from their mother far too soon, and in desperate need of a miracle.
Thankfully, a compassionate rescuer was about to step in and change the course of River’s life forever.
The First Orphan

Marissa, the founder of New England Puppy Rescue, remembers the day they received the urgent call.
“Our rescue got a call and of course we jumped right into action,” she recalled. That was 12 years ago, but the memory remains vivid.
River officially became the rescue’s very first orphan puppy.
He required round-the-clock care, but his resilient spirit quickly won over everyone at the rescue.
Inspiring A Movement

River’s successful rescue and rehabilitation sparked something much bigger than just one adoption story.
He helped found the organization’s Orphan Puppy program, a specialized initiative that has grown immensely over the last decade.
The program welcomes puppies six weeks old and under who have been abandoned or rejected by their mothers.
Because of River, countless other vulnerable puppies have received the specialized care they need to survive.
Stepping Into A New Role

As River grew into a gentle adult dog, he began to show a surprising interest in the new arrivals at the rescue.
He instinctively knew how to interact with the tiny orphans who had lost their mothers.
Marissa quickly realized that River could impart manners and create positive associations for the puppies in a way humans simply couldn’t.
“It’s really amazing to watch River truly understand it as a dog, so much better than we do as humans,” she explained.
Keeping The Peace

Raising a litter of orphaned puppies often comes with a fair share of chaotic moments and sibling squabbles.
Whenever things start to get out of hand, River steps in as the ultimate peacemaker.
He calmly gets up, walks right in between the fighting puppies, and gives them a look that immediately diffuses the tension.
“They both are like, ‘Oops, mom’s here,’ and kind of stop the fighting with each other and go on their merry way,” Marissa shared.
Protecting The Underdogs

River’s empathy shines brightest when he notices a puppy who might be struggling to keep up with the rest of the litter.
If a puppy is a little slower developmentally, or if the bigger, more confident pups are being too rough, River intervenes.
He will gently nose the boisterous puppies away to give the shy one some space.
Then, he will lay down next to the timid puppy, acting as a protective shield until they feel comfortable and safe.
A Humorous Mix-Up

The orphaned puppies are always incredibly excited to see their gentle giant friend.
Sometimes, their natural instincts kick in, and they mistakenly try to nurse on him.
“I’m sorry guys, but there’s no milk there,” the rescue staff will joke as River looks on with a confused expression.
Despite the mix-ups, River is always a good sport. He patiently waits for them to realize he isn’t their mother, never losing his gentle demeanor.
A Beautiful Legacy

The rescue never forces River to interact with the puppies, but he genuinely loves his job.
Because he is such a polite boy, he will quietly sit at the gate and wait for permission to go in and visit his tiny friends.
Through River, the rescue staff has learned a profound lesson about resilience and the power of second chances.
“Just because you have a bad start doesn’t mean you can’t make it into something beautiful,” Marissa said. Today, River spends his golden years ensuring that every orphan puppy gets a better start than he did.
