New York Dog Was So Obsessed With A Tiny Baby Chick That Even His Owners Couldn’t Explain Their Connection

A high-energy New York farm dog known for playing a little too rough with the animals finds his gentle side when he becomes the self-appointed father to a lone baby chick.

A Daily Morning Routine

Every morning on the farm begins exactly the same way. A large dog makes a beeline for a tiny feathered friend.

He walks right up to the enclosure, his body language making his intentions perfectly clear. “Hey, that’s my baby,” his owners imagine him saying. “Let me in.”

The object of his intense affection isn’t another dog or a favorite toy. It is a tiny baby chick named Wilson.

No one on the farm ever expected a dog of his size to become so deeply connected to such a fragile little bird.

Small But Mighty Beginnings

The dog, named Strauss, wasn’t always the gentle giant he is today. When he first arrived at the farm, he was a tiny puppy with a massive personality.

At not even a month old, Strauss was already trying to assert his presence. He was small, but he was undeniably mighty.

He would confidently march up to the farm’s goats, barking at them and trying to initiate play.

His energy was boundless, and he wanted to be involved in everything happening in the barnyard.

Loving A Little Too Hard

The farm also had chickens, and from the minute Strauss saw them, he was completely obsessed. Whenever he spotted a bird, he would run as fast as his little legs could carry him.

His goal was simply to catch them and play, but his enthusiasm often got the better of him.

There were times when Strauss simply loved a little too hard. Instead of being careful with the smaller animals, his play style was rough and tumbling.

His owners would watch his clumsy antics and worry. “Oh, my goodness,” they thought. “What are we going to do?”

The Incubator Watch

Everything began to change when the family needed to incubate a new batch of eggs. The delicate process required a safe, warm environment indoors.

To their surprise, Strauss took an immediate interest in the incubator. He seemed to understand that something important was happening inside.

Every single day, the dog would accompany his owner to check on the warming eggs.

Soon, he didn’t even need to be prompted. He started walking over to check on the eggs all on his own.

The Lone Survivor

Despite their careful incubation efforts, the hatch rate was lower than expected. In the end, only one single egg successfully hatched.

That lone survivor was a tiny, fragile chick they named Wilson.

From the moment Wilson emerged, Strauss was absolutely captivated. He couldn’t get enough of this new baby.

However, given the dog’s history of rough play, his owner was understandably anxious about letting them interact.

A Surprising Gentleness

“I was nervous because I’m thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, they’re so tiny and he’s big,'” his owner recalled.

But the moment Strauss was allowed near Wilson, a profound transformation took place. The clumsy, rough-housing farm dog vanished.

In his place was a careful, deliberate protector. With Wilson, Strauss proved to be the gentlest dog imaginable.

He would lower his large head softly to the ground, ensuring he didn’t make any sudden movements that might frighten the chick.

A Father’s Devotion

Their bond quickly became the center of daily life on the farm. While Strauss still helps with other chores, his priority is always his tiny feathered baby.

The minute Wilson cries out, Strauss drops whatever he is doing. He immediately rushes over to sit quietly by the chick’s side.

His owner believes the connection runs incredibly deep. “I think he actually thinks that Wilson is his true baby.”

Even when other chicks were eventually introduced to the farm, the dynamic between the two remained entirely unique.

When the new chicks arrived, the family wondered if Wilson would finally prefer the company of his own kind.

Instead, Wilson made his choice clear. The little bird was still far more interested in spending his time with Strauss.

Today, the unlikely pair are together all the time. Strauss walks around the farm like a proud dad, eager for everyone to see his baby.

“I’ve never seen a dog do this before,” his owner noted, hoping their beautiful friendship lasts for a very long time.
