After being abandoned in a California orchard with her litter, a terrified German Shepherd named Honey only knew how to hide in the dirt. But patience and foster care helped this resilient mom transform into a 70-pound lap dog.

A Heartbreaking Coping Mechanism

When Honey the German Shepherd was first rescued, the world was a terrifying place. She didn’t know how to accept a soft bed or a warm embrace.

Instead, the frightened dog sought refuge in the only place she had ever known. “At first, she was just comfortable being in the dirt, and that was the only place she found comfort,” her foster mom, Kaya, explained.

Whenever she felt overwhelmed, Honey would try to make herself as small as possible. She would dig a hole in the dry earth and curl up inside it, hoping to disappear.

It was a heartbreaking coping mechanism for a dog who had endured far too much. But her story was about to take a dramatic turn toward the light.

Dumped in an Orchard

Honey’s journey to safety began with an alarming message. A friend sent Kaya a picture of the German Shepherd mom abandoned in a Bakersfield, California, orchard.

Honey wasn’t alone in the fields. She had been dumped alongside her four vulnerable puppies, left to fend for themselves in the elements.

Rescuers suspect she was the victim of an unwanted litter. “We think Honey was definitely a yard dog used for breeding, overbred, and then dumped in the orchard,” Kaya noted.

They knew they had to act fast to save the entire family before it was too late.

Getting Off the Streets

Kaya, who runs Shiloh’s Animal Rescue, immediately coordinated an effort to save the stranded family. Volunteers rushed to the orchard to secure the dogs.

The rescue mission was a success. “We got three puppies already. Here’s two. There’s one, and we got baby mama all the way over there,” a rescuer documented during the recovery.

Getting them off the streets was the first major hurdle. The puppies were safe, but it was clear that their mother was carrying deep emotional scars.

While the puppies quickly thrived and were all eventually adopted, Honey faced a much longer road to recovery.

A Past Lacking Comfort

Honey was placed with a temporary foster at first, and then Kaya officially took over her care. It quickly became apparent that the dog was in “rough, rough shape.”

She suffered from severe panic and anxiety, often limping and looking for places to hide. The concept of an indoor home was completely foreign to her.

“I feel like she’s probably never been in a comfy bed or on a comfy couch or have a place to call home, really,” Kaya observed.

Even when presented with multiple large, soft dog beds, Honey would inexplicably choose to squeeze her large frame onto the tiniest one available.

Slowly Letting Her Guard Down

Despite her deep-seated fears, Kaya saw a glimmer of hope in the dog’s eyes. “I think she’s always wanted somebody to love her, but never really received affection that she’s always desired,” she said.

Kaya and her mother were incredibly patient, giving Honey the time and space she needed to decompress.

They didn’t force her out of her comfort zone, even when she still preferred to take naps in her little dirt holes outside.

Slowly but surely, the walls Honey had built around her heart began to crumble.

The 70-Pound Lap Dog

The transition was tough on Honey, but she eventually overcame her severe anxiety. The dog who once hid in the dirt blossomed into an incredibly affectionate companion.

Today, she is deeply bonded with Kaya and her mother. “We’re her number one fans, and she’s our number one fans,” Kaya shared.

Honey’s favorite place is no longer the cold ground. Now, she prefers to be as close to her humans as physically possible.

“She’ll throw herself on your lap, basically,” Kaya laughed. “Like she’s a 70-pound lap dog.”

A Healing Bond

The rescue hasn’t just changed Honey’s life; it has profoundly impacted Kaya’s as well. The two have formed a unique and healing connection.

“I feel really connected to her. I feel like she’s just one of a kind,” Kaya explained.

Whenever Kaya feels stressed out, Honey seems to know exactly what to do. The simple act of the dog flopping onto her lap makes Kaya feel “infinitely better.”

Honey has even developed a hilarious new habit to ensure she is never ignored. She will flop over and gently “punch” Kaya with her paws to demand immediate attention.

Waiting for Her Perfect Match

Despite everything she went through in her past, Honey holds no grudges. She is a remarkably resilient dog who absolutely loves everyone she meets.

“That’s what makes me so like sad is like this dog’s been through so much, yet she’s so resilient,” Kaya reflected.

Kaya has been fostering Honey since July, helping her transform from a terrified stray into the most affectionate dog she has ever known.

While they share a beautiful bond, Honey is still waiting for her forever family. When that special day finally comes, Kaya admits with a smile, “I’ll be jealous of whoever she goes to.”
