New Jersey Owner Notices Something Special About Deaf Puppy Cole And Realizes He Could Help Children In An Unexpected Way
What started as the adoption of a single deaf puppy named Cole in New Jersey blossomed into a multi-dog therapy team that is changing lives at local schools and veterans’ centers.
A Very Special Connection

When the time finally came to bring home a first rescue dog in New Jersey, the perfect candidate turned out to be a puppy born completely deaf. Not everyone understood the choice right away.
“The man asked me why I would want to adopt a broken dog,” the adopter recalled.
But this little puppy, named Cole, wasn’t broken at all. In fact, his deafness immediately reminded his new owner of their nephew, Chris, who was also born deaf.
That beautiful family connection sparked a fire within the adopter’s heart. It completely changed their life’s mindset, setting them on a path they never could have predicted.
As Cole settled into his new home in New Jersey, his true personality began to shine. It quickly became clear that he possessed a very special way with children and humans in general.
Seeing his gentle nature, his owner knew they wanted to pursue therapy dog training for him. The goal was simple but powerful: to change the way people think about differences.
The Perfect Advantage

Working as a therapy dog in an elementary school is a demanding job. The environment is often loud, chaotic, and filled with distractions.
However, Cole’s lack of hearing turned out to be his greatest superpower.
“It is a profound advantage to be an elementary school therapy dog and to be deaf,” his owner explained.
Because he can’t hear the bustling noise around him, Cole can dedicate 100 percent of his focus exactly where he wants it at any given moment. He offers his undivided attention to the children who need it most.
Born For The Job

Cole’s dedication to his therapy work is undeniable. His owner honestly believes, deep in their heart, that Cole knows he was born to do this job.
His enthusiasm is obvious every time it’s time to go to work. The moment he sees his owner grab his therapy vest, he hops right out the front door, eager to start his day.
Of course, the demanding work of being a professional comforter requires plenty of rest.
“When Cole is ready to take a nap, there is no stopping Cole from taking his nap,” his owner joked. But they always ensure Cole is happy, noting they would never make him do anything he wasn’t interested in doing.
Expanding The Pack

The journey with Cole, who was adopted in 2017, was incredibly rewarding. So rewarding, in fact, that it inspired his owner to open their home to another special-needs dog.
Four years later, a new addition named Cece joined the family.
Just like Cole, Cece was born without the ability to hear. Her owner knew from the time the tiny pup was just five weeks old that she was deaf.
Cece fit right into the household, learning the ropes of being a beloved companion and a gentle presence.
Sweet Alice Arrives

The family’s mission to give special-needs dogs a beautiful life didn’t stop with Cece. About a year and a half later, another unique soul came into their world.
Her name was Alice, and she brought even more love into the growing pack.
Alice was also born deaf, but she had an additional unique feature: a beautiful face with a cleft palate.
Despite her differences, Alice proved to be just as joyful and capable of spreading happiness as her older siblings.
The Morning Selection

With three wonderful therapy dogs in the house, getting ready for work has become a fun, daily routine.
Because a handler can only take one dog to school at a time, the mornings turn into a playful guessing game.
“Every morning, it’s kind of an eeny, meeny, miney, moe of which of the three are gonna be going to school that day,” their owner shared.
The dogs know exactly what the therapy vest means. When it comes out during the morning routine, all three dogs stop and stare, their eyes asking, “Do I get to go today?”
A Team Effort For Veterans

While the school visits are solo missions, there are special occasions where the whole pack gets to work together.
During weekly visits with local veterans, the entire trio gets to put on their vests and spread joy simultaneously.
Because they have multiple handlers available for these visits, Cole, Cece, and Alice can work the room as a united front.
Seeing the three deaf dogs working together to bring comfort to those who have served is a truly neat experience for everyone involved.
Popcorn And Purpose

When the vests come off and the workday is done, the trio transforms back into regular, cuddly family pets.
Off-duty hours mean the owner has to share the couch with multiple dogs. They often spend their evenings just chilling together with a bowl of popcorn.
“It’s cuddle time every single night, and there’s nothing like it,” their owner said, cherishing the quiet moments with the pack.
What started as a question about adopting a “broken” dog has turned into a beautiful, life-changing journey. Each dog now has their own role in the family’s mission, proving every day that being different is a gift that can make a massive impact on the world.
