The shelter environment in New York can be incredibly overwhelming for any animal, but for one dog, it was entirely paralyzing.
When a New York rescuer first laid eyes on her, the dog’s spirit seemed completely broken. She was gentle, but there was a deep, undeniable sadness in her eyes.
“I saw her eyes and I just saw how shut down she was,” her rescuer recalled. “She’s just like a shell of a dog.”
Despite her defeated posture, the rescuer knew there was a beautiful soul hiding underneath. She realized that getting the sweet dog out of the noisy kennel was the only way she would ever truly thrive.
The first step to her new life was a fresh start, quite literally. The rescuer decided to give her a gentle bath to clean her up.
As the water washed away the grime of the shelter, the dog began to realize she was in safe hands.
It was a small but vital moment of care that signaled her difficult days were finally behind her.
Once she was clean and dry, the dog—now affectionately named Poutine—stepped into her new foster home.
The change in her demeanor was almost immediate. The constant stress of the kennel melted away, replaced by the quiet comfort of a real home.
“As soon as she got home, she knew that she could finally rest,” her foster mom explained. Poutine finally allowed her exhausted body to relax.
Poutine was incredibly sweet to her foster mom, showing gratitude for her rescue. However, it quickly became clear that she had a favorite person in the house.
Her foster mom’s boyfriend, Jacob, completely won the sweet dog’s heart.
While Poutine wasn’t naturally the most active dog, Jacob’s presence always brought out a different side of her.
For a dog recovering from shelter trauma, energy levels can be low. Poutine was content to just exist in a safe space.
But whenever Jacob was around, her tail would wag a little harder.
“If Jacob was there, she could muster up that energy,” her foster mom laughed, noting how the special bond helped Poutine come out of her shell.
For weeks, Poutine showed no interest in toys. The concept of play seemed completely foreign to the shut-down dog.
Then, one magical day, a switch flipped. Out of nowhere, Poutine finally picked up a toy and started to play.
Her foster mom was stunned, exclaiming, “What is that? Oh my goodness! You’ve never done that before.”
Poutine wasn’t just healing; she was also acting as an ambassador. Her foster mom had always loved pit bulls and bully breeds, but Poutine was her very first bully foster.
Through sharing Poutine’s journey, she was able to show others the true, gentle nature of these often-misunderstood dogs.
“I was very grateful that showing everybody how sweet she was helped other people get over their misconceptions,” she shared.
As the weeks passed, Poutine’s true personality blossomed. Every milestone was celebrated, and every moment felt special to her foster family.
Eventually, Muddy Paws Rescue found the perfect adopter for her. When Poutine met her new mom, it was love at first sight.
Seeing the once-broken dog head off to her forever home was a bittersweet but beautiful victory. “I truly feel like she couldn’t have gone to a better home,” her foster mom smiled.
