North Carolina Animal Control Officer Glanced Into A Yard And Realized Something Was Terribly Wrong
After nearly a decade of neglect, a senior North Carolina dog holding a heavy dirt bike tire for comfort finally experienced the kindness of human hands.
A Heavy Burden

He was sitting alone in the dirt, holding a heavy dirt bike tire in his mouth.
For a dog named Mitch, this strange, cumbersome object was his only source of comfort.
He had spent his entire life at the end of a heavy chain in North Carolina.
But this senior dog was finally about to experience a kindness he had never known.
Hidden in Plain Sight

Mitch lived in a backyard completely exposed to the harsh elements.
He had no adequate food or water, restricted to a tiny circle dictated by his chain.
Shockingly, his suffering was happening right in plain sight of the public.
There was even a church nearby where people regularly passed by the property.
An Observant Hero

Despite the public location, it took a very special animal control officer to intervene.
She knew exactly what she was looking at when she glanced over at the yard.
Sensing something was deeply wrong, she decided to investigate further.
Her keen intuition ultimately saved Mitch and several other dogs on the property.
A Dark Past

When rescuers arrived, they learned the grim reality of Mitch’s existence.
At approximately nine years old, Mitch was a survivor of a cruel dog-fighting ring.
He was classified as a “champion” who had fought and won at least three times.
By the time rescuers found him, he had nearly outlived his dark purpose and was likely being used to train other dogs.
Expecting the Worst

Rick, an animal rescuer with Forgotten, Now Family Rescue, stepped in to help.
This was the first time Rick had ever participated in a fight dog rescue.
He admitted he didn’t know what to expect and feared he would encounter a vicious monster.
Rick was incredibly nervous as he approached the chained senior dog.
A Surprising Greeting

Instead of aggression, Rick was met with a dog desperate for affection.
Mitch seemed almost impatient, as if asking Rick to hurry up and pet him.
He happily invited the rescuer into his space, eager to show off his beloved dirt bike tire.
“This was a dog that was so happy to have kind human hands on him,” Rick recalled.
The Freedom Ride

The moment Rick unhooked Mitch, everything changed.
“The sound that heavy chain makes when it leaves your hand, when it hits the ground… it’s incredible,” Rick shared.
Mitch was loaded into a vehicle for his very first freedom ride.
He was finally heading to a place where he would be safe and cherished.
The Emotional Support Tire

Once Mitch was safe in his kennel, his rescuers wanted to give him something special.
They found a toy company that makes rubber dog toy tires and bought one just for him.
It quickly became his “emotional support tire,” replacing the heavy dirt bike part he used to hold.
He would sit happily in his kennel, wagging his tail with his new favorite toy.
A Chunky and Snuggly Future

Today, the severely underweight dog Rick first met is completely transformed.
Mitch is now very well-fed, enjoys plenty of treats, and has gotten a little bit chunky.
He has traded his harsh outdoor life for indoor comforts and has become wonderfully lazy.
When Rick suggests a walk, Mitch often prefers to just lay down and snuggle instead.
Finding Heart on a Chain

Despite the cruelty he endured for nine years, Mitch’s spirit remained unbroken.
His ability to survive and still love people so deeply amazes everyone who meets him.
For Rick, the rescue was a life-changing experience that went far beyond saving a dog.
“I found my heart on the end of a chain,” Rick said, “and his name is Mitch.”
