Ohio Wolf Dog Was Too Traumatized To Trust His Rescuer, Until A Long-Lost Family Member Arrived

After surviving an abusive past, a rescued Ohio wolf dog learns to trust again when his sanctuary caretaker receives an unexpected phone call about his long-lost brother.

A Difficult Beginning

When Jacob first arrived at his new Ohio sanctuary, the traumatized wolf dog was completely overwhelmed by his indoor surroundings. His rescuer tried keeping him inside her house for a couple of weeks to help him adjust to a quiet life.

But it quickly became clear that the walls were far too confining for him. Desperate to be outdoors, Jacob began busting through every blind in the house.

He was a survivor of an abusive breeder, and the deep emotional scars left him extremely fearful and anxious. His rescuer knew she had to find a better way to help him feel safe.

She decided to move him outside, hoping the open air would calm his racing heart.

Finding His Safe Space

The sanctuary was already home to a pack of six rescued wolf dogs, creating a beautiful chaos that the caretaker managed every day. She gave Jacob his own space in a sprawling, one-acre enclosure.

Once he was finally free in that large outdoor area, Jacob seemed to breathe a sigh of relief. However, his fear of humans remained deeply ingrained.

He wanted absolutely nothing to do with his rescuer, keeping a safe distance whenever she approached. She would gently call out to him, offering him the choice to come sniff her on his own terms.

Despite her gentle coaxing, Jacob preferred to stay far away, watching her suspiciously from the safety of the trees.

An Unexpected Friendship

While Jacob was hesitant around his caretaker, he surprised everyone by showing a soft spot for her daughter, Ella. For reasons only Jacob understood, he felt entirely safe in the young girl’s presence.

The rescuer couldn’t help but laugh at the irony of the situation. She joked that she did all the hard work to raise and care for the pack, but Ella was the one who got all the love.

Whenever Ella walked into the enclosure with treats, Jacob would cautiously but willingly approach her. He was incredibly gentle, carefully taking the food right from her hand.

It was a beautiful breakthrough that proved Jacob was capable of connecting with humans.

Trusting The Process

Allowing a large, traumatized wolf dog to interact with a child required immense trust and observation. Thankfully, the rescuer was highly experienced in reading canine body language.

Because she could accurately gauge his comfort level, she felt completely safe allowing Jacob to form this special bond with Ella. She watched closely as their relationship blossomed.

Slowly but surely, Jacob began to grow slightly more comfortable with the rescuer as well. He was still very suspicious, but the walls around his heart were starting to crack.

He just needed a little more time, and perhaps a familiar face, to fully come out of his shell.

A Life-Changing Phone Call

Everything changed when the rescuer received an unexpected phone call from Molly, who runs Walking Wild Rescue in Ohio. Molly had a very special question to ask.

She wanted to know if the sanctuary would be open to taking in another wolf dog. But this wasn’t just any rescue animal in need of a home.

The dog in question was Vardan, Jacob’s long-lost brother. The two had been separated for over a year and a half.

For the rescuer, the decision was immediate and easy. Reuniting long-lost brothers was an opportunity she simply couldn’t turn down.

The Nervous Arrival

When Vardan finally arrived at the sanctuary, the rescuer took careful steps to ensure a safe introduction. She placed Vardan into a small, secluded enclosure within the main wolf dog yard.

She honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. After being apart for so long, there was no guarantee the brothers would remember each other or get along.

It was a highly stressful time for everyone involved. The rescuer kept a close eye on the enclosure as night began to fall.

What happened next was nothing short of miraculous.

Together At Last

Jacob spent the entire night right by the side of the secluded enclosure. He refused to leave his brother’s side.

At one point, Jacob actually began pawing at the fence right where Vardan was laying against it. It was an amazing and emotional moment for the rescuer to witness.

When the day finally came to release Vardan into the main enclosure, the rescuer held her breath. But she didn’t need to worry.

The introduction went incredibly well. Thanks to the hard work Walking Wild Rescue had done with Vardan, the two brothers immediately began developing a great relationship.

Healing Through Family

Having his brother by his side completely changed Jacob’s demeanor. Vardan’s confident presence helped bring the fearful wolf dog out of his shell more than ever before.

Just a couple of weeks after Vardan arrived, Jacob did something incredible. For the first time ever, he willingly took food from his rescuer through the fence.

The rescuer felt deeply honored to be entrusted with both brothers. Watching them reconnect after so much time apart was a heartwarming reward for all her hard work.

Now, Jacob and Vardan have a forever safe place to live out the rest of their days, side by side.
