Heartbroken Oregon Dog Spent His Puppyhood Alone On A Chain Behind The House
After spending his puppyhood chained in a backyard, a dog named Harvey found himself in a loud shelter. But one quiet gesture changed his life forever, leading to a beautiful journey of healing and adventure.
A Lonely Start
For a young dog with severe separation anxiety, being left alone is terrifying. But for a puppy named Harvey, his former family’s solution only made his fears worse.
Instead of working through his anxiety, they decided to chain him up outside. For at least a year of his puppyhood, he lived in a backyard, isolated and longing for connection.
Eventually, the lonely pup was taken to the local pound. Surrounded by the deafening noise of other scared animals, Harvey waited for someone to finally see him.
The Power Of The Lean
In 2016, Olivia’s partner walked through the noisy shelter looking for a companion. Amidst the chaos of barking dogs, he noticed something special about Harvey.
Harvey was the only dog not barking in his kennel. Intrigued by his calm demeanor, the man asked to meet him in the play yard.
Once outside, Harvey walked right over and fully leaned his body weight against him. As Olivia notes, “You get the lean from the dog, you know, you’re in.”
Breaking Through The Panic
While Harvey had found his person, his past trauma still cast a long shadow. His separation anxiety was incredibly severe in those early days.
He became deeply attached to his new dad and panicked whenever they were apart. The terrified dog would even break down windows to get out of the house and find him.
It was clear that Harvey needed patience and understanding. His new family had to show him that he would never be abandoned again.
A Memorable Introduction
The following year, in 2017, Olivia went on her first date with her now-partner. She believes that a person’s relationship with their animal reveals a lot about their character.
When her date mentioned that Harvey was waiting in the car, she was thrilled to meet him. She approached the vehicle, ready to see the dog who had captured his heart.
Harvey was immediately right up in her face, sniffing and greeting her. She was struck by how incredibly social and happy he was despite his difficult past.
Learning To Feel Safe
Over time, Harvey began to realize that he was finally safe. He learned that when his parents left the house, they were always going to come back at the end of the day.
It has been a beautiful process watching him find his independence and trust. He now knows he can take space away from his parents without fearing he will be left behind.
Today, he loves to simply bask in the sun and enjoy his peaceful surroundings. When his parents return home, he still loves to jump right up on the couch and curl into their laps.
Embracing The Great Outdoors
Living in Oregon has given Harvey the perfect playground to explore. His family loves the outdoors, and Harvey goes on tons of adventures right alongside them.
He has traded his heavy chain for the freedom of the Pacific Northwest. He spends his days running in the snow and even joining his family while they ski.
Because they live near the river, Harvey has also discovered a deep love for swimming. He is finally getting to do all the outdoorsy dog things he missed out on as a puppy.
An Empathetic Soul
As they worked through his anxiety, Harvey blossomed into a deeply empathetic companion. He is incredibly attuned to Olivia’s emotions and the energy in the room.
Hilariously, he knows the difference between her being truly sad and just being dramatic. If she cries at a sad video, he refuses to coddle her, expecting her to pull herself together.
But if she is having a genuinely hard day, everything changes. He immediately tunes into the gravity of the situation and stays by her side to offer comfort.
Making Up For Lost Time
Harvey’s appearance is just as unique as his personality. While he looks like a Pit Bull and Boxer mix, his DNA tells a completely different story, revealing a blend of Springer Spaniel, German Shepherd, and Rottweiler.
Now eight years old, Harvey is living the good life. He has even become more playful, enjoying the company of a younger dog brother in the home.
For Olivia, there is an added layer of attentiveness when caring for Harvey. Knowing the neglect he survived, his family strives every day to make him feel assured, loved, and comfortable, making up for the time he lost in the dark.
