When Illinois rescuers found Sprout on the street, she was so severely matted that she barely looked like a dog. It took a dedicated team and hours of grooming to uncover the beautiful Mastiff hidden underneath.
An Unrecognizable Soul
When rescuers first spotted the stray animal wandering the streets, they had to do a double-take.
She was so severely neglected and thickly matted that it was genuinely hard to tell she was even a dog.
The heavy, tangled coat pulled tightly against her skin, making every single step a painful struggle.
Knowing she couldn’t survive much longer in this condition, the rescue team scooped her up and prepared for a massive undertaking.
Hours of Patient Grooming
Once safely at the rescue facility, the team named the sweet girl Sprout.
It was immediately clear that a standard grooming session wasn’t going to be enough to free her from her painful prison.
A team of four dedicated people had to step in, carefully working together to safely shave away the hardened shell of fur.
The delicate process took several hours, as they had to be incredibly gentle to avoid nicking her sensitive skin.
A Staggering Weight Lifted
As the massive sheets of matted fur finally fell away, the team decided to place the discarded coat on a scale.
They were absolutely stunned to see the final number: they had removed exactly 32.4 pounds of fur.
“It’s heavy. Oh my God. It’s really heavy,” one of the rescuers remarked in disbelief.
Sprout had essentially been carrying the weight of an entire extra dog on her back for months, if not longer.
The Dog Hidden Underneath
With the heavy burden finally gone, the rescuers discovered a completely different dog underneath.
To their surprise, sweet Sprout was revealed to be a beautiful Mastiff mix.

Shortly after her life-changing groom, Sprout packed her bags and headed to a loving foster home.

As Sprout’s confidence blossomed, the rescue knew it was time to find her a forever home.
They were initially worried about finding the perfect fit for the large, formerly neglected pup, but the adoption coordinators worked their magic.
They matched Sprout with a wonderful family who already had their own Mastiff, giving her a big sibling to show her the ropes.
Today, Sprout is thriving in her new home, proving that with a little patience and a lot of love, the most incredible transformations are possible.
